Should South India form a Federation?
by exoticbronze on Sep 13, 2009 06:01 AM  | Hide replies

There had been suggestions about the Southern States and territories of India forming a South Indian Federation. Infact former AP Chief Minister, Chandra Babu Naidu is a strong proponent of a Southern Federation. More than 15 years ago he had also floated the idea that every state in the South should have a State Flag and a State's emblem and Anthem. At around that time there were ideas to put together PAKKT (Pondicherry, AP, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu) a trade/commerce oridented Federation of South Indian states. The territories of the federation of South India, would work together to offer reciprocal waiver of tarrifs and duties to ensure free flow of services and goods within the south. Goods and services coming in from any territory in the world that does not belong to Federation of South india would be taxed.

The PAKKT federation was started, but has not gained momentum. The main reason for the need of PAKKT was the long felt discrimination experienced by Southern states by the Central govts. No investments in infrastructure or commerce and little investments in rail in South as compared to Bihar, UP, WB etc. Narsimha rao changed things for the better for South, by letting them invite investments directly from abroad - freeing them from the shackles of North Indian 'license raj' slavery, wherein licenses/investments were made in North earlier. While the south has made tremendous progress by delinking from Central dependence, lot more needs to b done for autonomy.

Please contribute to this thread with sensible ideas, even disagreements. No name calling please.

The above suggestion of PAKKT - an economic federation of the territory of South India - is a non-violent, non-political peace loving, progressive movement for the uplipftment of the people of South India and their common shared identity and culture.

Since successive Central governments have neglected the South in terms of per-capita allcation of central funds, economic autonomy to PAKKT members would be a good stepping stone to liberate the PAKKT territories.

Further since PAKKT territories can directly seek investments and technology transfer from the developed world, PAKKT members can be rid of the bureaucracy of India that slows/discriminates against South.

Greater direct investment in Education/research/Agriculture by advanced nations of the world would make the PAKKT federation an important research and investment destination of the world. By arranging reciprocal student and tourist exchange programmers with advanced nations, we PAKKT citizens can develop critical mass of agricultural and tech knowledge base for our development.

Further, as PAKKT gains full economic autonomy, PAKKT can convert the increasing economic and fiscal clout, and their bilateral relations with Europe, North America, Middle east, to gain greater political autonomy as well. For this if PAKKT is required to pay hundreds of millions or billions as severance pay to India, that should be considered.

Another area that PAKKT can gain immensely through a separate SIS Federation (South Indian States Federation), is by promoting far reaching urban development. We can make plans for building new advanced ultra modern cities that will withstand population/pollution/technological challenges for 500 years. These cutting edge urban developments must be planned at hitherto uninhabited areas so that development happens from scratch...interconnected through Interstate highways that have a minimum of 10 lanes each direction. The Chinese have bettered the US blueprints in the highways they are developing, and SIS/PAKKT (South Indian States Federation/ PAKKT) must tie up with the Chinese/Americans to share the technology and/or train our SIS engineers. Each urban center - City/town must have infrastructure aimed at developing childrens' physical/mental abilities - sports, games, gymnastics, martial arts, track and field, swimming must be a compulsory part of education for all girls and boys, in addition the mathematics, sciences and arts. Education for girls in the SIS Federation must be both compulsory (till Bachelors degree in any discipline) and FREE (for as long as the female student irrespective of age wants to study. If a woman wants to take Phd or several Phds, the expense for tuition and students living expenses would be borne by the state).

More importantly, SIS cities have to be kept clean, through stringent checks on non SIS visitors - no spitting, pan, cheats, lazy, untidy.

Our PM is giving such hollow assurances since last five years It is high time he acts as today even a middle class person is having difficulty in arranging two square meals a day while his Ministers are recklessly spending public money in five star Hotels

our stomachs are full with assurance already. Of course India have enough food for the ones who can pay the ever increasing price. Not only food, India have everything from french wine to frivolous Hotels for the ones who can pay with their black money.

It is just the less unfortunate lot who gets thrashed drought or rain.
