Gender equality??
by Sathish N on Oct 28, 2009 01:08 AM

What does that mean???

Females are good in some area and males in some other. What is the need for one to try to emulate the other. Politics is all about coming us with news and policies to divide people. Come out with law favouring one group and they will rally against the other. Short term gains for long term loss.

Total govt failure
by Bodh Ramdeo on Oct 28, 2009 12:47 AM

Do people really need the WEF to tell them this? On every level of human development, India is one huge, big failure.
It has the largest amount of under-nourished, starving people- 85% of the aam aadmi live on less than US$1/day, while 60% are totally illiterate. Hundreds of thousands of women die pre-childbirth, during childbirth and post-childbirth from preventable illnesses, lack of basic care and undernourishment, and millions of children die before they reach 5 years. And we're not even talking about the lack of the other basics- housing, schools, clinics, water, electricity, roads, etc, etc.
Total failure at every level of govt- local, state and federal.

Address women problems before equality.

Fighting for equality is an unsaturated state of humans. Equality is often mistaken for freedom to do anything without responsibility.

Employees want to be equal with employers.
Wife wants to be equal with husband.
Poor want to be equals with rich.
Lower castes want to retain caste status but be equal to upper castes.

Many questions do arise.

Can we claim equal status without acheiving the merit required?
Did equality ever bring peace & happiness? In other words, does it work?
Isn't Shakespeare's, "Taming of the shrew" a story of humiliation of a woman?
Can Ramayana, Mahabharatha remain as epics with equality concept?
Dont we witness more family tensions with husband, wife, kids fighting for equality & freedom?
Isn't divorce rate increasing in India with fight for equality?

Men & Women are of complimentary nature. Each half is important & cannot be equated. Thats probably why aged Indian couples dont fight for equality & they care for each other. US has equality in abudandance & in divorce rates too. Do Indians prefer their social structure of equality?

Equality is a general problem of educated, richer, high class society where feminists do still exist. This is not where majority Indians are & we dont need to focus here.

The evils of dowry, harrassment, pros & violence against women are bigger than problem of equality.
Indian govt should clean up slums of prostitution, implement minimum wage, social security thru employment which helps women issues

if you compare a wife wanting to be equal with her husband as similar to poor wanting to be rich then you need to change your attitude. Stop bashing the west when India has had a pathetic record of protecting women. Dowry harassment and violence is not only in slums. So get your facts right before you strain your intelligence.

Read again before you throw up comments. I did not say slums have dowry problem. I said dowry & prostitution in India are bigger problems than mirage of equality.

India is a country that seeks to acheive equality by giving cane to merit class & carrots to rest of them.

Reservation for women, OBC, STs, SCs, minorities, BC, BTs. When does this end?

Study the statistics on domestic violence, divorce rates, teenage pregnancies in the west before getting "US cultured".

It is clear from your comment why there is no equality in India.

Equality is not given. Equality is acheived. Equals by definition cannot be exploited by equals. Isn't it? Stumped?

Be practical. I am pitching for women who die everyday in hells of prostitution. I am pitching for women who are burnt for dowry. I am pitching for those women who cannot fight against domestic violence.

A housewife not treated equal with her engineer OR doctor husband should be the last thing on our priority list. Isn't it?
