We need it more!
by shiva on Oct 08, 2009 06:21 AM  | Hide replies

US has it all, they need not hurry but what about us?

US is on way to scale-up wind energy. In fact, they can meet all their energy needs from Mid-West wind potential. When the push comes to shove, they will power ahead! When oil passes $ 150/barrel, they will go hammer & tong! Plus they have geo-thermal, bio-fuel etc.

We are more in dire need! We can hardly make dent through bio-fuel. Our wind potential is limited. We do not have geo-thermal which thrives in volcanic areas, thank God! We have coal but it can kill us through pollution, though cheaper to produce!

The real potential is solar. Yes, it is expensive, but why not the govt invest in R&D, subsidise & connect remote areas to the grid in a planned way? As long as we depend on oil, we will indirectly promote you know what! The ordinary Joes in US are benefiting from wind energy as when the blades turn it means money! For us, our blinding sun can be turned as our biggest asset.

Our best can get us the break-throughs. Today an Indian, though NRI, won Nobel prize! We have it in our genes, comeon! The hard core engineering can be encouraged by the govt. Though we were too humble to shout from the roof tops, did we not find water on the moon? Let others take the credit but let our aam aadmi also shake his legs a bit, like the sheiks, through capturing solar energy.

Break-throughs are achieved when dreams are converted to realities. It is time we made a concerted effort!

You got it right mate. India has huge potential in solar. But our government is sleeping like always.
At least if they cant do it, they should letpeople do it. Right now there are so many restrictions on private parties starting a small power plant. Allow individuals to start up solar plants with capacity of 5-10MW. AT least it should take care of much problem.

Let's create a clean energy grid
by Thomas Mathew on Oct 07, 2009 10:22 PM  | Hide replies

India should create a power grid purely for renewable energy sources like solar and wind. Rajasthan is one of the few places on the planet which has sunlight throughout the year. We should create hundreds of solar panels there.

solar panels power cost Rs 17.5/KW , now u r paying 3.50/kw. Are u willing to pay the higher cost.

Its only promoted by rich or bankrupt f00lish govt like california state, nevada, newyork and some european.

Only solar water heating systems are most efficeint way to utilise solar power. you can recover cost in 2 - 3 years.

solar panel power takes 25-30 years not including battery and other replacement costs.

Dude, when they invented the telephone the president of the United Sates said " I cant think of any use of this expensive contraption". We need to spend millions for research of course. Nothing is impossible.

What is unsustainable is the current dependence on fossil fuel. That would drive us all extinct, its a big price to pay

Very informative & nice interview !

Congratulations Mr Vinod Khosla & kudos to you for the new 'Green' ventures! Bio-fuels can be produced without depleting the world's food resources, is true. Are our Govt Policies / Regulations favorable for clean/green technologies implementation?

And how much energy can be produced from bio fuels? If you were to convert all farming land in the US and grow biofuels on them, you still won't be able to fulfill the transportation needs. And we have not even touched electricity generation here! Bottom line: biofuels are not energy dense. Solar thermal is the best renewable and clean energy generation technology. You can erect these plants in DESERTS, leave alone the farming land for food, and still cover ALL your energy needs. EU plans to develop these in northern africa. and the amount of land required - 1% of the great sahara desert! beat that biofuel!

About innovative clean technology for rural poors of India
by kn singh on Oct 07, 2009 06:24 PM  | Hide replies

Mr.Vinod Khosla
Greetings from ADHAR [N.G.O.],Kanpur.
As ADHAR is a non profit making organization working for marginalised, deprived, downtroddenruraland urban slum communities.
We have developed fuel efficient wood burning stoves for rural population of India,it provides smoke free, cool, clean cooking zone and it reduces 50-60 percent fuel consumption and time of cooking, because it has 3 burners,it utilizes 75-85 percent of fuel incomparison of conventional stoves. It reduces pressure on forest and it reduces green house gas emission and saves health of women and girls who cook food in old conventional stoves.
We are demonstrating this technology in some villages with support of UNDP SGP,But it is neede to extend in some more backward areas, for that we need your financial support. Can you assist organization financially in this context to benefit poorest of poors of India.
Hoping to your hearing soon.
With my best wishes.
Yours for ever
K.N.Singh
