1) About a month ago, I was given an automatic subscription to some kind of Cricket Update by SMS and billed some amount for that. I'm a completely ABnormal Indian, in that I don't follow cricket all that much. I send a stinker of an email to Airtel customer service with a copy to their head customer service and the service was immediately discontinued and the money returned.
2) A couple of weeks later the same service was activated on my Mother In Law's airtel pre - paid connection, this time she was billed for six months in advance Rs. 120 or something! My MIL, Wife all called up the helpline no. and finally this was reversed.
3) A couple of days later, in my MIL's phone, Hello Tunes were activated and again she was billed for six months in advance! This time when my wife, MIL etc. called, Airtel said, someone had called to activate this facility on your phone and hence this is as per your request, however the call center refused to divulge the number saying that was confidential information! I later on called the call center number from another phone and very politely was able to obtain the number from which the call was placed. On calling the number we realized it was another Airtel number, probably used for telemarketing by Airtel!!!! In the meantime, the talk with a operator facility was disabled on my MIL's phone number. Anyway we got the money back after 24 hours.

I am waiting for the day when I will get out of Airtel with my number. I think since they are aware of this, and have around 11 crore subscribers as they claim, they are lobbying to delay the number portability plan. Else it was supposed to go live in some circles in last september.

Indian, the same thing as in (1) above happened with my colleague in Kolkata. Same auto subs to Cric update, deactivation after a plethora of sms and ph calls and then auto-activation again! Once, the activation occurred the very day on which some refund took place! And I have a Reliance connection in which CRBT (caller tune) service used to get activated each time. I made almost a dozen ph calls. Each time they said it'd b deactivated for ever but that didnt happen. Moreover, they never had a clear ans to how it hpnd each time. In later times, I was accused of to have deliberately activated the service. Wht do u call these ppl? not pickpockets, but beggars who rnt shameful enough even to ask for the money.
Even I faced similar kind of problem with the Tata Indicom USB Modem...they sent the same bill twice and I had to deposit it two time....tired of which I got it disconnected and switched to BSNL

I fully endorse your views. BSNL is far far better to all these private providers who say something and do manythings, without our knowledge. More so the customer care of private operators does not care for existing customers which is not the case with BSNL. BSNL with its courteous manpower can do wonders and capture 80% of indian market provided there is no red tapism and the seniors cooperate.
may be even i should also take up my matter to the court..i ve been charged a totla of 18 thousands for using bsns broadband where i was outta station for one month n wen i asked for a detailed bill i was told tat they cant give tat..
