politics has been the best entertainment for indians till date. cricket or K serials are nowhere in line.
one can watch as much news as possible till it has masala politics and nautanki of laloo and amar singh. bayaan bazi of mayawati has also helped increasing TRPs of news channels. other crap netas like mulayam, paswan, karunanidhi and amma have only added spices to this khichdi.
Major passtime of Indians has always been politics. If you look at the weekly magazines and monthlies politics covers sizable portion. when I was young, when travelling the Public tansportation , I always hear strangers talking to each other about the politics of the day.
