If the computer's become super fast the viruses will become superman and will made software-Tata. So, do the well established hardware and well technic software, that can manage any deleted data by Viruses.

Kudos to Tata Sons
by Anumakonda JAGADEESH on May 14, 2009 10:47 AM

Three cheers to TCS, Tata Technologies, Tata Strategic Management Group,Tata Sons and other companies for bringing out Eka Super Computer. The super machine, developed at Tata Group’s Computational Research Laboratories (CRL) in Pune, is the fastest computer in Asia and the first one developed using corporate funding. Eka (Sanskrit word for number one), is a Hewlett-Packard based system with a performance of 117.9 teraflops. A teraflop equals a trillion calculations per second. A supercomputer is the equivalent of 20,000 ordinary computers put together but the comparison stops with power. ‘Eka’ was developed entirely by Tata Sons.TCS, Tata Technologies, Tata Strategic Management Group and other companies from the Tata stable have contributed to the project. This computer will enable CRL to offer computing services in the field of weather forecasting, oil & gas exploration, drug discovery, gaming & animation and data mining, among others. The supercomputer is powered by a Linux open source operating system and it is based on standard hardware to address the issue of application scalability, which has been the bane of supercomputing till date.

What is the usage?
by amit saxena on May 14, 2009 09:43 AM  | Hide replies

How much power it will consume .Is that really useful. You are consuming power supply sufficient for a village in AC and cluster.

it worries me to know your line of thinking. super computers are very useful in solving certain class of problems that would take years to solve on a normal desktop that you and me use to surf rediff.

a very common example is simulation of temperature and velocity field in a given enclosure. such computations involve huge processing power. Unless we solve such problems, research in certain vital areas will hit a dead end.

Super computers are synonymous with scientific development. If you do not have it you can not dream of developing. Its as simple as that.

just think, if in a competition of number crunching, you are not allowed to use your calculator and your nemesis is. lack of s super computer will be something similar to that.

The fact is in India most of the supercomputers are wasting power .There is actually no job running on it. Most of the research community of India have no problems that require supercomputing power. Can the Tata EKA justify its power consumption ovwr usage? Maharastra is facing severe power problems and the supercomputers are wasting a lot of power.

Seetha Rama Krishna, you are not just doing this for the TATA's but for the pride of the nation. Every endeavour has challenges and your is a niche that needs the best to bring out the best. When CRAY was denied to us, we developed our own. It was not faster than CRAY then but now CRAY (the config we begged for)is left far behind. We now own amongst the fastest super computers that can meet our needs in telemetry, animation, analysis, design and development... aeronautics etc. We salute you and wish you early success.

Tata's can't
by Ananda Raj on May 14, 2009 09:00 AM  | Hide replies

"This is not an easy task,"
Why? Indians' competency?
Tata management wants to fool the nation by its brand name.
Any of their research helped the nation?
they are not winner; they are runners in any field.
License Raj made them great, not by competency.

bhai, if it was only becasue of Licence Raj, then Tatas wud have crumpled by now.. look at Hindustan Motors or Premier Padmini. They are standing high itself is the proof that they are capable. Indira Gandhi had tortured Tatas to the limit because he was not aiding in to her reqt of corruption. thats why he is behind the Ambanis...

Think positive if you want to achieve excellence.
What have you done, Mr. Anand Raj , for India in your respective field?
What is your level of performance and achievements?
Look inside your own self before commenting on TATAS.

So many people around the world want to know that "What is the Net Worth of Ratan Tata"? TATA Group is running 96 businesses & out of which 28 Companies are publically listed on the various stock exchanges. Tata Group is world's top 50 Group according to Market capitalization & Reputation. Have you ever thought why Ratan Tata is not a billionaire on the Forbes magazine list of billionaire people of the world? The reason is that, TATA Group's 96 companies are held by its main Company "TATA Sons" & the main owner of this TATA Sons is not Ratan Tata but various charitable organizations developed & run by TATA Group. Out of which JRD TATA Trust & Sir Ratan Tata Trust are the main. 65% ownership of TATA Sons which is the key holding company of the other 96 TATA Group Company is held by various charitable organizations. So this 65% ownership ownership of Tata sons Limited is not reflected on Ratan Tata's personal Financial Statement but on the various charitable organizations. This is the reason why Ratan Tata is not in the list of Billionaire club. If we put this 65% ownership of Tata Sons in Ratan TATA's own personal financial statement then Ratan Tata's Net worth can become more than $ 70 billion. That's much more than Warren Buffet's Current Net Worth of $ 62 billion, the world's richest person according to Forbes magazine 2008. Good thing about Tata Group is that, they do Charity out of their Money & that is the reason TATA Group has generated goodwill over last 5 generations.

License Raj existed for every company in India till early 90s.
Dont you think company's like Tata's, Mahindra's, Hero Honda, Bajaj etc have achieved their success because of the Raj post 90's?

Think about it.
Company's like PAL etc, that did not wake up, have perished. The above listed companies not only woke up, but also have made India's name outside.

Travel to countries like Singapore, Malaysia, South Africa, Europe to see Indian vehicles been adopted by these countries.

They are not sold there because of Raj, but because of their capability, quality and price.

People like you can only see good things in foreign companies.

And when Tata says that upgrading the Supercomputer is not an easy task, well, we all know it. He is not talking about upgrading 486 DX2 for God's sake !!

No Kedar,
But shouldn't we as responsible citizens at least try to achieve that?
If everybody says that India will remain divided in cast, religion and region, how will we unite?

Nehru made the mistake of dividing India in lingustic states, our politicians are dividing then in religion and castes.
Britis would be proud to see a divided India !!
We got to stop it.

I agree with you Gautam, but unfortunately it is a difficult proposition. People with your thinking are too few. Pick up any discussion forum, on any damned topic, and eventually the discussion would stray towards politics, caste, religion and region.
