Stop using American Products
by aaaa on May 13, 2009 10:52 PM  | Hide replies

If American company like Coke stops investing in India from the money it makes thru Indian operations then we should stop using American products. What Obama is proposing is Stupid. This will only lead to collapse of American MNCs. I would surely bet that if US passess this legislation he would lose in the next election.

Your comments reflect ignorance.

People don't buy products like Coke because Coca Cola reinvests its profits in India. They buy it because they associate a certain personal utility in consuming it.

The vindictive approach you are recommending is part of the reason we had the Great Depression. Trade benefits everyone.

Obama is trying to rectify a huge loophole in the U.S. tax laws. According to the law, if U.S. companies that earn profits overseas reinvest the profits overseas (not necessarily in the same country), they don't have to pay corporate taxes in the U.S.

Several large companies exploit this by earning profits in countries like India, then show that they are reinvesting the money into another business overseas. In reality, they incorporate holding firms in tax-havens like Seychelles and deposit the profits into their account and show it as "reinvestment".

Obama, being a politician, is pandering to his voters by spinning this straightforward tax reformation as an action against outsourcing, a phenomenon that several Americans resent. (Two birds with one shot.)

Indian IT companies missed the bus?
by Srinivasan Ashok on May 13, 2009 10:44 PM  | Hide replies

In year 2000 , Infosys,Wipro and Satyam were projected as the future giant in IT market and listed the stock in Nasdaq. What happened now? One company vanished due to fraud. Other 2 companies are still doing same service job and failed to come up with any new product like Google or Youtube?. When Microsoft / Google opened their shop in India and it was like euphoria and proud moment for every one in India. The reason was, it came up with world class product. Do you think, Anybody proud if Infosys/TCS/Wipro opened the shop in other countries? I think the IT companies in India would face more hurdles in future as small countries like Vietnam and eastern European countries willing to provide same service in far less price.

@above, you are comparing a product company against a service company like Wipro or Infosys. Being proud doesn't necessarily based on what product xyz compnay offers. For all that matter if google cannot generate enough revenue from their investments, it will go in dust just like any other dot com era company. So please don't under estimate service oriented Indian s/w companies.

Unless & untill Indian IT companies produce world class products like windows , they have to depend upon thin margins .Without innovation you can not expect Indian companies to survive in global competition.

When he says "bangalore" he doesnt even know what he is talking about. He is just a "newcomer" who is influenced by the thoughts enduced by preconcieved notions. He is not "anti-indian. Infact I would say he is more broadminded than his last counterpart. just let him have some time at office ..that will cool down his nerves and he will be able to recognise whats more beneficial for his (and our)country.

Whole crisis have been started with IT people
by SOVANDEV MANNA on May 13, 2009 08:44 PM  | Hide replies

IT people are fully responsible for the present economic crisis. Now a days lots of make shift engineering colleges are producing IT engineers who do not have any brains . If they have real IQs, they should have created companies like Microsoft. Technology & advancement requires innovation which these so called IT engineers are lacking.Fat salaries without any justification has actually created a bubble in Indian economy. We need more & more scientists to make India strong & powerful.

Not quite right. You are confusing the development of IT industry to macroeconomic crisis.

The economic crisis is precipitated by a variety of reasons, none of which significantly influenced by India's IT industry. However, the economic crisis did influence the already downward-oriented margins for software/IT service providers, as large clients are wary of spending during the liquidity crunch.

Even without the economic crisis, the Indian IT landscape is undergoing a phase characterized by fundamentals of a competitive market. Initially, when few knew programming, their work was highly valued. This resulted in high salaries. (Fat salaries were not paid without justification; employers pay well only when the work results in an even higher return.) As more programmers joined the work force salaries began feeling downward pressure.

The market for software and IT services is undergoing the same process: too many companies offering the services and the margins they can command is going down.

We cannot "manufacture" more scientists. People will pursue careers as scientists only if it is rewarding. Asking government to pay hefty salaries will only create a temporary spike, as the salaries suck up capital from the economy as taxes, resulting in yet another macroeconomic crisis.

We cannot decide which industry or profession must be encouraged. It will be dynamically decided by the collective but uncoordinated actions of people like you and me, also known as the market.

Well drafted, Mr./Ms Your Persona. Although your argument based on demand-supply forces in the market goes well... don't you feel, given the current global economic meltdown, it's high time to consider 'Quo Vadis' on IT for our country rather than be driven simply by fluctuating market forces? I mean the education on IT, the products of IT that need to encouraged etc? Why should IT be a separate course - afterall it needs to be thought with almost every application oriented subject? Rather than address the buisness concern of someone else abroad, why not look for much needed IT solutions to a number of problems specific to our country. Eg IT for agriculture, IT products for integrating with the dense communications network of this country for several admin and day-to-day chores of people, social security smart cards, e-money etc...

Anybody can work in IT and code, even a 6th std school boy can do it.
To do this we dont require 4 yrs engineer course, just one month rocket(speed) course is enough.

Those who take 1 month courses and start a job, rarely succeed in the career in the long run. You will soon hit a plateaue above which you cannot rise. You will be a coder or tester for life but rarely an enterprise architect.

Asking WHY is a taboo in India.

School teachers must solicit and record all WHY questions from your children and give them to you at the end of the day.

If I were the Prime Minister of India, I would AMEND Constitution accordingly.

HI,

No wonder the quality of our code is abysmally bad . we dont need Obama to screw our software industry , it already screwed up by guys who think coding is easy and write some stinking code which does not scale and is not easy to maintain . I have been in the Industry for 12 years and know that Europeans write the best code and no wonder they dont outsource to India .

I agree with you on software quality standards and that it is terrible these days with low quality talent coming in and writing poor and inefficient code. But I disagree that Europeans write the best code. I have personally seen the output of eastern europeans as well as Germans and they are bad too. Just look at some of SAP's software which is so poorly written and documented.

Few industries remain prosperous for ever. You must invest in continuous learning or will not be competitive when your niche industry undergoes a severe downturn. Instead of starting from scratch all over again, use a progressive approach. For example, if you are a software engineer and have experience developing applications for the insurance industry, start learning more about insurance industry (beyond just software), perhaps training to become an actuary or ombudsman.

When the software market declines, you will be valuable as someone who knows the nuances of the software that powers the business, but more importantly understands the more strategic aspects of the business itself. And your resume will reflect continuity, not a break and switch of careers.

(From a historic perspective,
