* Asking WHY is a taboo in India, School teachers must solicit and record all WHY questions from your children and give them to you at the end of the day.

You do not become a scientist because you are taught well. Of course, bad teaching can kill enthusiasm. I myself had experienced it and survived inspite of very stiffling curriculum and professors. The saddest thing in our way of treaching is that concepts are taught as facts. Hardly any analysis is done at any stage in one's life. The basic question of "what one means by understanding a concept" is not dealt with properly. For example, students study analytical geometry[cooridnate geometry]without realizing that it is synthesis of algebra and geometry [ that there is a figurative representation of an equation and every figure could be expressed mathematically]. concept of limit in calculus took 100 years for precise definition but we seem to study it in one or two classes.

If u were not educated you would have bee a rickshawpuller or labourer or a dishwasher in a hotel or like. U became a scientist or whatever u r today to write these comments in this column because of your education. In your this transformation from a rickshawpuller which you would have been to what u r today there is a great contribution of your teachers (the Indian ones!!). Dont u feel it is great?? Those who are talking of the 'whole world' (...worst in the 'whole world' - in the title of the topic)might not have seen even an iota of the 'whole world' and talk so loud mouth. Go to American Universities (ur dreamland) and see for yourself how much the teachers teach there? Many things you have to read and learn. Indian teachers really great. They work so hard with the students and make their conceptions crystel clear. I salute my (Indian) teachers and pay my respect into their feet and request them to forgive these 'west-blinded' Indian creatures who see everything west as superb and every Indian thing (including their parents and teachers as - bull****).

Edward Teller... your one statement.. "concepts are taught as facts and no analysis encouraged by teachers" is profound.
Teaching in most of the colleges in India is more of running through the syllabus rather than an exercise in learning, applying and analyzing the concepts.

Indian teachers are the best, they do not get the facilities provided elsewhere, yet they perform. Good student too leave India for research work in western countries and the Indian teachers lose them after building the foundation. Dont talk like stupid, keep your unnecessary views to yourself.

Well, increase salaries to babus, IIT professors etc and help incompetent babus and professors to boost their names. Worldwide, university greatness comes from Research & Development and how its scare recourses are effectively utilsed. Unfortunately even with thousands of crores are R&D funding to IITs, the amount of research papers published are not comparable to amount of funding these universities are getting. Today these universities are favorite among industry because here you will find Graduates who came through hard-work, knowledgeable and who if given opportunity in R&D, product development etc may shine. The problem with IITs are IITs them self. In R &D funding they are killing competition!!! Funding organisations including Central and state govts think that IITs are supernatural beings and give them funds. If they don't get result, next time also they give funds IITs. When not even IIT could complete R&D how will others do? When we compare other universities worldwide in R &D they are successful because each prof not only responsible for teaching, he is also responsible for bringing funds from funding organisation. And he works for success for future projects. Universities like MITs became what they are with hard work. Its time we do not create super natural universities.

The problem of retention will become acute for pvt institutes by this move for lower rank institutes & govt colleges. The teaching staff in most govt colleges get their Phd by copy paste method once in life & than enjoy the promotions in tome bound manner. The title of professor in US/Europe has stiff requirement of a minimum number of papers published & students taken under for fellowship. The same rule should be made applicable in India before allowing anymore increase in salaries for teachers who can be put under lowest productivity norms.

It won't for 3 years now......all the cost increases like increased pay packets to faculty, rising cost of electricity and fuel, rising salaries of administration dept, rising cost of study material etc have all been factored in the increased fees...so relax and take CAT..........
