not enough information

If this news was combined with some expert comments about possible reasons for their decision to abandon operation it could be really helpful. I bet Argos or its partners would never disclose reasons themselves, it is intellectual value for them.

From my point of view, Argos may have found following key points:

1. In India due to low labour cost people can get good quality furniture to suit their personal need. In UK everything is created based on fix measurements (i.e. window/door size, cupboard size etc are fixed).
2. Returns policy is crucial for catalogue and telephone based sales, because people do not get to see product before purchase. In indian context it is not easy for buyer nor for seller to trust each other.
3. In current recession it is not feasible to invest in new expansion when your existing stores are struggling to cope.
4. In india companies work on low margin and high turnover; which takes longer to get return on investment.
5. Competition: In india once a business is successful, there will be many similar businesses mushroom in no time undercutting price and margin both.

Argos !!

Argos is a way to cheap products. The problem of Quality is to be complely forgotten, as anything made of wood is as good as if it was made of cardboard. Basically its not good.

Its not Indian Market its the Indian Quality Standards Argos cant reach.

Here in UK there is no option as the company which owns Argos owns other furniture companies and sometimes its better to get from Argos inspite of its quality because to get it build is out of question !!

Argos if u read this, stop importing from China, think about India, we can give better or worse quality !!!

Argos not worth a bean, even UK I do not shop at Argos.
I like to see my what I am buying in reality and not in a picture.
For furniture there are Plenty of really good furniture shops in UK.
rest what Argos is selling is available in any high street even some times cheaper then Argos catalog which is only worth as paper weight.
For me any way.

I completely agree... i have been in UK for very long and havent bought anything from argos yet... we indians would like to see the products for real, before purchasing it... and also, Quality of the product is more important... People in UK have use and throw mentality and so not too worried abt the quality, whereas its not the case with us..a nd so i have never bought anything with Argos, cos i know that their prducts wont last long...

Looks like you are Mr.UK and a rich guy. Well I also live in UK and purchase mainly toys, watches, jewellery etc from Argos mainly when deals are available. So does my Indian colleagues as well as Brits. Theres nothing generalized like nobody gets it from Argos. Its the catalog company that still stands which itself is a great thing in this recessionary period. No western companies can survive in India with their customer values because people will tend to exploit it to the max and courier/post system is not dependable. Even in UK they cancelled digicam returns just because a section of people abused it too much. No prize to guess who that wud be!!!
And FYI - even Dharavi people may have some humanity left but the richer guys def. will no thave any as we have seen in several riots like Ahmedabad, Delhi etc as well as Mumbai bomb blasts. People come in Mercs and loot shops; they will rob fellow passengers as well. So your outbursts on you poorer brethren living in north UK or East London clearly gives the mindset!!JFYI the rich in people tend to make 15000 net per month and they generally tend to be cool / charity-minded. With you language and opinions I bet you are anywhere in that bracket.
