While common man faces inflation business face recession!!
by Dony Worry on Feb 14, 2009 11:39 PM

IT is really strange that Business face recession and cutting salaries (of ordinary employees only) while, most of the essential commodities which includes, wheat, rice, vegetables, pulp, oil, milk, etc...costing us more every month!!! Rent is getting increased every other year, petrol is expensive compared to 1 year back, transportation cost increased, household wages increases, property prices still not affordable for 80% of the population.

Industrial masters take easy measures such as wage cut while consciously ignore other hard options.

Can you be specific about the name of the company you are talking about?

To my knowledge, almost all companies are facing one problem or the other due to economic slow-down.

The learned management pundits say that in such times of economic slow-down, uncertainities and war etc. it is better to adopt austerity measures to protect the larger interest of the company and its employees. And austerity measures do not stop at curtailing existing expenses, it also means stopping future and expected expenditure also.

In my opinion, your company is adopting the right path.

No one is bothered now a days of globalization if company is cutting expenses or not. We just had 200th birth anniversary of Charls Darwin and well aware of might is right. This is equally applicable for industries too. Leyland was a great and important symbol in India but 20 years back. Today we have lots of choices and one is really not bothered for specific brand like Leyland. In fact the parent company in UK was closed more than 30 years back. There is nothing special about this.

Well the buzz word is constant upgradation in terms of knowledge and technology. Any industry which does not strive for constant improvement of human resources, technology and the end product, the end user is likely to reject the product of that company.

Ashok Leyland is a major auto player and has always been trying to give best value for money. This phase of economic slow-down might have effected the financial position of this great company. Wait for a couple of months, this will bounce back and continue to be in lime light. Please note that I am not talking about share price but actual performance.

My experience in Bharat Electronics is that even in such a premier company mechanical engineers get predominance in management and electronics engineering get a rather raw treatment in the name of sale.In the process most of the electronics engineers become chrlatan to get promotion and other benefits. So the position of the company in global arena has taken a bit.It is used as a conduit for foreign companies to get a foothold in getting orders.
I am clear similar is the situation in Ashok Leyland.MBAs get higher preference in the system at least.

We produces nothing worthwhile in electronics. All the technology for all our products come from either DRDO or foreign companies. What we do is produce the PCBs, fabricate the boxes, prepare cable assemblies and integrate. Our so called Engineers are all duds who cannot be employed in the private sector. The bright guys anyway have all left and gone abroad or joined lucrative private sector jobs. If is is not for the partiality shown by the MoD towards our company, it would go the same way as ITI, once a level playing field is created. Most of the so-called Managers in our company, after retirement take up jobs in private companies where they report to people who are 15-20 years less in age. This is the calibre of people in BEL. It does not matter if it is Electronics Engineers or Mechanical Engineers ... the work output and intelligence level will not change.

My Experiance in a company like ITI Ltd is different.
We mechanical Engrs joined when Commn was Electro mechanical.
We were needed. But when tech turned fully Electronics we were called Nut and bolt fellows and sidelined used only for
assembly,SCM purchase and all type of odd jobs. The fellows in R&D got all dominance promotion foreign training and visits but we will get to implement the project through them and produce. This was pathetic. Even Now I regret having chosen to Joina company like ITI with my Mechanical background

Like I said earlier, it does not matter whether it is Electronics Engineers or Mechanical Engineers in PSUs. ITI does not have any technology to show nor any talent in its workforce to generate any useful output. ITI is still surviving because Sonia Gandhi has pumped in Rs. 1500 crores into this company because one of the ITI factories happens to be in her constituency. Now that the lungi from Kerala has taken over as Defence Minister and since one of ITI's factoies is in Palakkad, his home state, lot of 'work' is being offloaded to this factory. Had the NDA come back to power, ITI would have been closed ... this would have been a real blessing rather than wasting taxpayers' money on reviving sick cos. like ITI and IDPL. Engineers who work in PSUs must take a conscious decision when they are 40-45 years and leave these organization and either satrt business or take up employment in the private sector. Because after this age they are become hopelessly out of touch and egoistic. This advise is only for the good and capable engineers not for those who have used quotas all their life for their career upliftment.
