Great Article / Journalism
by Guest on Aug 07, 2009 12:36 AM

Normally i dont comment on such forums. But looking at this article cudnt refrain from doing so :-). Its great that a someone in media has listed down all the facts & tried to reason on what is exactly happening. Such articles would show the real picture to the public who never really get to what goes behind the scenes. Reducing taxes or fuel price will help some of the companies easily reduce their losses or make profits at the cost of other people. They should better focus on operating efficiently, and changing the way they do business if they have to sustain in the longer term... if they are really interested in building a company which lives beyond them. Taxes etc would help them get some immediate profits but if they dont change their operations / business they would again be asking for such things in future. Their inefficiencies would only increase.

Great job at pulling together all these numbers & making a genuine effort of bringing out a story that is more close to the real thing that is happening.. Keep it up.. Hope to see more of such stuff in future.. On a side note .. RIL - ADAG - Govt Dispute is another big thing if someone is really interested in finding & reporting the true picture :-).. everey media house has its own business reasons on wht they want to highlight.. which is understandable.. lets see if sumone really tries to bring out all the facts behind the whole thing being played out in the media..

Thanks
Rishu Gupta

difference between low cost and full service airline.
by Harshit Saxena on Aug 06, 2009 10:11 AM  | Hide replies

Will somebody explain me the difference between full service and low cost airline, for economy class passengers, except for food and newspapers which are given during the flight. What else full service airlines provide, which low cost ones do not.

There are several differences between full service airlines and low cost airlines other than what we the passenger ever sees. Some of them are :

1 a single passenger class
2 a single type of aeroplane (commonly the Airbus A320 or Boeing 737 families), reducing training and servicing costs
3 a minimum set of optional equipment on the aeroplane, further reducing costs of acquisition and maintenance
4 fast turnaround times (allowing maximum use of aircraft)
5 emphasis on direct sales of tickets, especially over the Internet (avoiding fees and commissions paid to travel agents and computer reservations systems)
6 employees working in multiple roles, for instance flight attendants also cleaning the aircraft or working as gate agents (limiting personnel costs)
7 aggressive fuel hedging programs
8 avoiding using jetways to board and alight passengers by using a mobile stairway which is a cheaper alternative.
9 Dynamic pricing policies

That was a very well articulate and well thought out response Kunal. Very well done. But couldn't help observing that you have provided us a picture from the airlines point of view. I think what Harshit was aiming at was to find out what difference in service levels to be expected from a paying customer's point of view (apart from the obvious complimentary food)?

PRIVATE CARRIERS TO BLAME THEMSELVES
by farokh irani on Aug 06, 2009 10:04 AM  | Hide replies

WHEN U DO A BUSINESS LIKE AIRLINES, THERE HAS TO BE SOME BUSINESS MODEL VIABLE FOR U TO DO THE SAME. WHEN JET WAS INTO THE PRIVATE AIRLINES IT WAS DOING GOOD BUT STILL IT HAD PROBLEMS. OUR SO CALLED FLAMBOYANT BUSINESSMAN WENT INTO PRIVATE AIRLINER CALLED KINGFISHER, IT WAS NOTHING BUT TO SHOW OFF Mr. GOYAL THAT HE CAN DO BETTER BUSINESS. IT WAS THEN THE EGO CLASH OF THESE TWO GENTLEMEN THAT THEY R NOW SUFFERING. WITHOUT ANY BUSINESS PLANS THEY WENT ON ORDERING NEW AIRCRAFTS AND BOOKED FOR NEW ROUTES, INTERNATIONAL AS WELL AS DOMESTIC AND NOW THEY R SUFFERING AND EXPECT GOVERNMENT TO BAIL OUT. IF UR BUSINESS COLLAPSES ITS UR PROBLEM DEAR AND NOT NATIONS.
