The root cause
by Ranadeep Das on May 18, 2008 10:44 PM

The problem is not naxal movement but its origin that lies in inequality in education, awareness, wealth distribution, social structure and governments%u2019 effort. Just a decade ago, in undivided Bihar, there was monarchy in absence of social reform initiatives.

The economies of these states are dominated by mining and other labor-intensive jobs like forestry & agriculture. Significant population is also engaged into logistics support that takes away natural resources outside.

To get the benefit of cheaply available raw material with minimal transport cost, capital-intensive primary industries mushroomed in these states. With abundant fossil fuels, thermal power plants came out. Now we need consistent water supply to feed these plants. Thus water reservoirs and dams have been planted with government supports that took away hundreds of acres of cultivable lands. In absence of mass scale land reform initiatives, very few hectors of cultivable land has been replenished. With minerals, energy and labor support, steel plants came out. Again that feed away plain cultivable lands.

Thus, local inhabitants left with no other alternative job but to work as contract labors, decade after decade. We talk about fancy 5-year plans, Indira grameen Yojona, minimum employment guarantee schemes and all these. But, more than a quarter billion people living BPL with little to spend for basic amenities of life.

Naxals are fighting illogically. That doesn%u2019t mean they don%u2

The problem is with the government not willing to reach out to villages with alternative ideologies
by Vishnu Sharma on May 18, 2008 09:13 PM

If the Indian government is worth its salt.
It should reach out to every village and combat this menace.
Naxalism will be eliminated when we eliminate the source which supplies the Naxalites the weapons and also the Naxalites themselves.

When I look at the RSS, I double over with laughter. What are these khaki Chaddiwalas going to do against armed insurgents with Uniforms and guns. Their lathis can do nothing against an AK-47.

On the one hand you have a force of 10 million with the right ideology who just do not possess the means to combat this menace.
You cannot do things half and half.
You have to run the whole mile.
If you need to implement something you need to do it in full measure.

On the other hand you have the forces of the state who are not ideologically motivated at all but who are adequately armed.

Which is why I started a new outfit with just this in mind.
THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC WORKERS PARTY.

We have declared that, not only Naxalites but journalists who make these scumbags heroes in the Indian press are our enemies and we will eliminate them root stock and barrel.

We need to introduce draconian measures to make sure that the press does not glorify these thugs and give idiotic reasons for the Naxalite phenomenon.

Change will take place in India but not by displacing millions of livelihoods in our villages. The Government needs to reachout to villages and ensure this.

I am in total disagreement with ypour thesis- prof. Gupta. If you recall the 'good-old' days under Nehruvian socialism, who thrived, other than the corrupt politicians? India is finally emerging thanks to globalization. Now people have many options, if they work hartd, they get ahead without political influence. Supply anddemand have always ruled the market place.Sure inflation is high in every country, and that is due to healthy competition for petroleum. Here is USA, peoples'mind set is changing as gas prices have gone from a dollar to 4 dollars now. This will result in new environmentally friendly technologies and businesses- where India can compete. And the planet will be much better for it.

With globalization, I am hoping the common man in India gets to see what true democracy is about- and kick corrupt politicians out. In the old days, only one TV channel controlled by Rajiv Gandhi, and people did not know how the rest of the world gets along with out political goondaism. In those days, the PL 480 funds were eaten freely by politicians. Nothing got to the common farmer. Now farmers can get on the internet and market their goods. Now people in India are empowered, knowledge is power- please use it.

We live in a changing world, we need to adapt, or get left behind.

Professor R K Gupta does not deserve his professor title.

Where did he get this from ? JNU ?

JNU needs to be shut down forever.

It is campus that has been breeding anti-nationals instead of enterpreneurs.

The whole curiculum at JNU is suspect.
Any right thinking individual will outlaw JNU and arrest all these so called intellectuals who are parading Marxist ideology.

Imbalance in society should be removed
by Ranjith M on May 18, 2008 08:41 PM  | Hide replies

Eventhough india boast of having the richest in the world.. There is a big population left with nothing. The disparity between rich and poor in india is highest in the world. While the average earning power of middle class is reaching to 1000$ pm the poor is struggling to get 20$ to 50$ pm.

Naxlbary movement which took birth in West Bengal as a counter force to the growing atrocities of the land lordism, spread to Orissa & very fast to A.P from where it percolated to M.P,Chattisgarh, parts of Maharashtra & of late to certain pockets of Northen India also. Thus, it could be stated pervading almost in all parts of India except perhaps Gujarat. It cannot be brushed aside as mere law & order problem created by tribals alone, but a social one too in as much as many educated elite & intellectuals are voluntarily involved acquiring a name for activities of present day Robinhood. However,it is now stigmatised as band of torturists of the rich headed by an extremist section who take violence, murders as means to achieve their goals. The misguided educated youth who are the brain behind naxalism are ready to join the main stream of the society provided the Govt lifts all criminal cases, effectively rehabilitates & accepts them as part of the society. While naxals are not lacking in their missions, some times police take a tough stance & commit excesses of which the often quoted are "bogus encounters" killing the "innocent" according to the outfits.Meanwhile, politicians too try to encash the situations to their advantage & play to ensure that the problem remains for ever-as their trump card for future use.If not, what happenned to the follow up of the Govt's meetings held with the top naxalite leaders immediately after the Congress coming into power in 2004?Both are wrong.

Basically India will slip into oblivion
by gagan chadha on May 15, 2008 08:43 PM  | Hide replies

For centuries India has been under rule ofr foreigners. They cared only as much to enjoy their own material comforts. Indians were nobody's botheration.

Then came the britishers, they made lutyens delhi for themselves and the so called "posh" colonies around Delhi were basically slumhouses.

Look at the stark difference between London or for that matter any other English city and Delhi or any other Indian City.

Under the imperialistic rule, only the priveleged few had access to facilities and the masses were left to fend for themselves without infrastructure or facilities.

This "Priveleged Class" system still persists in India and they are the people who enjoy all the infrastructure, rest, even after 60 yrs of independance still fend for themselves.

Last year I met a japanese govt servant on a flight, he introduced himself to me as a "public servant", and he said so in a very matter of fact manner without any airs.

I happen to deal with govts departments abroad for purpose for common work - filing taxes, depositing social funds and I get delayed sometimes in doing so. There is nobody reprimanding or asking for favours or else. The police behaves like common people in the normal course - not like in India.

The crux of the whole essay is that India is nobodies country, I went out, I started hating it. I want to come back with 10 billion dollars and buy out governance and get India on track. But its a foolish Idea really.

A common sentiment yours, urge you to indulge my alternative viewpoint...

India represents an eternal antithesis to the idea of a governed civilization. India represents following 'organic' principles of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness(borrowing the overused US phrase). The proof of its success is India and Indians are still around...beneath the changing surface, essentially holding on to some frustratingly untamed yet enormously pliable viability that defies rational worldview...but lives on..successfully, daresay, largely happily!

Indians too self centered and Indians intellectualize everything...the basic social institutions that emphasize love and reaching out for fellow humans is not present. Indians have built up a strange class of English speaking brown skinned snobs who consider their fellow Indians pitiful. Under the strange brand of Indian secularism India threw away its thousand year old Hindu heritage upon which it could have built those institutions. Secularism has also left Indians unable to cope with Islamism, a supremacist radicalized political system. I worry about India. While I saw how Americans have educated themselves and mustering all resources to end Islamofascism, Indians have to listen to bleeding heart morally superior writers like Kuldip Nayar, movie makers like Mahesh Bhatt and hundreds of others who obfuscate and make Hindus feel guilty.
