500 B D is a small matter for a country like India. It is not that the entire fund is required overnight. It is required over a period of time - 5 to 10 years. How to get it? If in the name of election 60000 Cr can be waived off, (and much more of course) if for each rail, road and air accident crores of Rupees can be given as ex-gratia, if many costly hours of Parliament and Assemblies can be wasted, it is very each for getting 500 BD too. If there is a plan, nepotism is set aside, sincere efforts are put in, the money will flow in very easily. You would have notices, all projects (roads, flyovers, bridges, etc.) built with our Tax Money is leased over to few for collection of toll fee. So toll fee is on products of our own tax money! If this entire fund is taken to treasury instead of pockets of few, do you think 500 BD is a big issue? Develop projects one by one, the benefits coming from completed projects would fund the new ones. Since implementation is more important than big planning!

FYI, 60000 crore is 15 billion USD. I too feel that 500 billion USD is 4 years that is approx 125 billion USD per year, or 500000 (five lakh) crore per year is quite steep.

A very simple solution - stop living in socialism and adopt and embrace capitalism. Its not coz of some super genious Indian got better in last 5 yrs .. its coz of Capitalism. Tax- the only way. 90% of popultion doesn't know what its is..enforce properly - u will have enough money to build Infrastruture. Take any country who has good infra. has a good tax plan

As the author has put forth, its the collection 1% of GDP that should go into investment for infrastructure every year that we are debating. As pointed above, most of physical infrastructure in anyway in BOT model where the private parties have to invest upfront. Major road development, ports, airports etc can go thru similar route. In terms of housing stock also private sector is major investor, but here as the Govt is major landholder apart from farmers, it should look at avenues to unlock this value instead of making it cheaply available for SEZs. The problem, i believe, is not of availability of funds. Its more to do with the expectations of the political class to make a 'CUT' in the investments. This problem cannot be handled unless we make such 'DONATIONS' to the neta's legal and give tax break! So even if instead of 500bn, 510 bn is reqd, it'll come by.

Can you do anything (other than paying tax) to help govt execute all your demands? If not, you don't have any rights to demands unless you have some concrete solutions.

Well Said Varghese.. the situation in this country is so hopless and pathetic that it is beyond anybody's reach to get things right here
There is no value for educated people in our country. For instance a traffic cop (constable) probably a 10th pass makes atleast 50k per month and that too without and tax. Standing at a traffic signal one can see how easily these people fleece innocent people in the name of law.
Politicians are one more example of how uneducated people are getting richer and richer while the educated continue to suffer.
The list of situations/places where uneducated people are enjoying the tax payers' money is endless. Tax deduction at source happens to us educated people while the uneducated businessmen continue not to pay taxes.
One would wonder what is the future for educated people in our country. No wonder the politicians are trying to get more people educated by means of 27% reservation probably to reduce competition..

HOW CAN DEATH PENALTY BE BROUGHT INTO EXISTENCE, WHEN THE LEADERS WHO CREATE RULES ARE LOOTING THE NATION. CAN A ROBBER CREATE A LAW AGAINST ROBEERY?
But i think the most important is "Thinking" about the whole process and plan for each type of project in detail ,right from the hurdles like political ,social etc,to raw materials,to cost, timing of each activity and human resources etc ,RATHER than just the FUNDS,because having funds is one part but how to use it efficiently and in the best way is the most important part.---- eg is "Delay in project completion a common news item.
Once people have faith the system that a project will be implemented on time with reasonable profits ,funds and investors and capital raising would be easier
what is the future of india in 21st century and role of imf in helping the developement process as evident fro my research work submitted to national innovation foundation for an award with no response so far from any where
