How did they make money?
by Bipin Rajgopal on Mar 26, 2008 04:54 PM

For clarification to few of you who are not sure about the sharemarket game played by initial public offerings....

First make a plan of the business, and have a minimum investment of 3Cr. (correct me if wrong).
evaluate all additional efforts like people behind, ideas and again set the net asset as a bigger amount. Lets assume it to 7Crore. So total asset of the company is now 10Crore. Issue 1 Crore of share at Rs.10/share.

Now sell it at the initial stage itself by hiking it to 100rupees, by creating media hype and showing future potential. You earn instantaneously 97Crore.(ie,100Cr-3Cr)
There is no real asset or product created, all just virtual.
That is why communist call it speculation and gambling... they do have a point.

How many of us know that realiance power which earned a fortune for Ambani has not even generated 1Watt of power?

Please dont abuse as I pointed it out like this.

Wealth creation

There are some basics involved on the motivation part. Mostly, people once in the game never look back. For some, success follows success and they are smart in avoiding pitfalls.

The greatest ability is the people factor. One need not be a technocrat or an MBA. The basic understanding of how to get good people to stick with you is a real winner. I salute Dhirubhai. He made the billions in India at the most difficult time. I can imagine him being ridiculed for his vision as he waited endlessly at the corridors of power for never ending approvals. Mind you, at that time the peons & clerks were the deciding factors. It was really a test of endurance to get any eye contact, let alone proceed further than that. He would have waited days on end, as he did not have a track record or big money to throw around like his sons now.

L N Mittal made fortune overseas. He found only opportunities after he was used to only hurdles at home especially in WB. Many Keralites, though not in the lists, were appreciated outside, when any initiative was put down by crab mentality at home.

Now, the Russians & Chinease are able to find their due recognition. The latter were highly successful through skilled networking in many countries, which made Deng Xioping, turn the system upside down.

While the excesses of capitalism have to be curbed, nothing drives creativity more. A system of equal rewards for all is a dampener. Wealth creation does not come easy.

Is Laxmi Mittal an Indian
by MANSOOR on Mar 07, 2008 03:37 AM  | Hide replies

Why do we count Mr.L.N.Mittal as an Indian, He & his son have always claimed to be british citizens. I am proud of the fact that the Ambanis have made their wealth here as they have also created wealth for others who had trusted them with their money & invested in them, they are not only wealthy individuals but also wealth creators for Indians, but the Mittals???

worry
by gac on Mar 06, 2008 11:57 PM

one more major worry is that majority of middle class ppl voluntarily becoming slaves to these mammons and are stuck to it in the fear of losing their current lifestyle. considerable number of them could've become billionaires if they were on their own which also would have created more employment opportunities.
