working hrs for govt staff
by KALKI on Feb 29, 2008 04:49 AM  | Hide replies

Increase working hrs of govt employees. Slash govt public holidays to equal those in pvt sector. only then can their pay hike be considered.
People working in pvt sector are anyways working hard.
Reduce or eliminate prsonal income tax as tax evssion is high. If needed excise may be increased as high excise is passed on to all customers who buy the product and so is broad based.
Increase penalties for wrong doings including corruption. Like Singapore, fines and penalties on wrong doers can be a source of revenue and lead to more discipline.

Increasing the working hours for government staff means more 'black revenues through bleeding of common man - i.e. Black I.Tax' for them. Hence, either privatise all government work or eliminate corruption.
There are more tax evaders than taxpayers. Hence, the government should focus on compliance by giving incentives to honest taxpayers. I don't understand why government is not taking any action to eliminate corruption?

Whenever(once or twice a year) I go to an expensive restaurant with family, I see it crowded by the 'corrupt' people who spend their ill-earned money by 'eating out' because they cannot by 'billable' items since there is a chance of getting caught. Disgusting and leads to mood-out.

EXPLOITATION OF OUR LABOUR
by Dhorabh on Feb 28, 2008 09:44 PM

As per the Law of diminishing returns - productivity decreases beyond a certain limit.

Most countries fix that at 40 hours per week. But again, these are developed countries. hence, most MNCs frustrated with that are shipping jobs to the third world like ours where no labour laws would exist and their motto reads : EXPLOIT well, even if laws did exist, then you could change them for a price. what say FM???

i think u guys r very much aloof from general awareness.. if u guys are so worried about the country ..why dont u try to become civil servants? Either you guys feel that ur caliber cant fetch u that job or u guys must be happy to jus sit in AC n work for some MNC.. i m an IT professional..!! n i respect civil servants.. bcoz i know the reality n the situation under which they work..

I agree with you.

But people are getting themselves confused by understanding that number of hours to be spent by labourers/employees would be increased.

Its the no. of factory hours that needs to be increased versus no. of employee hours to be spent in factories.

Where is development
by binu thomas on Feb 28, 2008 06:43 PM

The rise in GDP hardly got any influence on the general public. Poor remains poor. Public and govt. sector have badly affected by inflation and high cost of fuel. The savings narrowed, people are forced to spend more for daily living

A creamy layer of high paid private sector -especially IT's are benefited by mergers and acquisitions.

No steps has ever been taken for the uplift of majority like farmers and unemployed. Good idea to conserve water and distribute it to barren farm lands in MP,AP,TN,UP etc. Big corporate should be levied for this project.

Tighten tax system. Every body should pay tax propotional to their income. Tax collection to be improved and time limits and fines to be set

Indegenous the imported technology and tax the corporates who continue to import finished or semi finished goods for their products

Lot more can be done if looked more rationaly

Don't Panic !!! Increase work week to 60 Hours
by Dhiren Thakkar on Feb 28, 2008 06:36 PM  | Hide replies

Please do not panic. What it refers to is, Under Factories act work week should be increased from 48 hours currently to 60 hours i.e. daily limit 12 hours. Rationale for the same it to increase productivity to meet seasonal demands.

It doesn't say that employees have to work for 60 hours. What it means it factories need to run for 60 hours. This to my mind will generate employment as well as productivity but not working hours of employees (including me) :)

Hope it clarifies the issue.

How would this translate to work hours for a worker? do you believe they'd work only 8 hours a day. This will lead to exploitation of labour force as is already the case with many MNCs and IT cos.

Malaysia instituted this rule with the same logic and today their workers go full shift ie 12 hrs a day!

Kudos FM..you have sold the workers too.....am sure you bargained hard with the babu's and MNC's into your bank account!
