why do children have to work ?
by Ashok Gupta on Feb 12, 2008 04:45 PM  | Hide replies

Its sad that children have to work when they should be studying and enjoying their childhood.
Question is why do they work ? Is it by choice or because of poverty and that if they dont work there is none to feed them. Who can stay hungry ? All very well to say that this and that should be done. First of all all TV channels must highlight merrits of a small family and also highlight good economic sense.
Population has to be brought under control. We all know that the law can be purchased and to enforce it is another big task. Till we within ourselves uplift the poor the govt.will only look at them as vote banks promising a lot but doing little.

You are correct Ashok Gupta.
The core problem has to be tackled first, that is there a bred winner in the family,if there is one why cant he feed the family are his wages so low that he toils for 23 hours out of 24 and still cant earn enough that he has to send children to work.
Now if a board on the field says No child labour, is it not the work of the police to make sure that the company owning abide by the law, but no corruption kills all here and the company gains.
On the other hand there could be no one to earn in the family thus the child has to work.
It sounds easy but is very difficult to police the system unless all who are responsible take action including public.
Unfortunately there is no social security system in India as there is one in UK and Europe.
children here in west work as well but only during school holidays the again no more then 16 hours a week and on light duties, and must be over 14 years of age.
No heavy lifting etc is allowed.otherwise it is classed as child abuse and the trading standards do not take it lightly the fine can ruin the business it is so heavy and in swear cases the employer can also be imprisoned.
The core problem needs to be sorted out first.
If a big company like Monsanto abuse the law then a fine of few crores should not be thought upon but just handed out with no9 appeal.
And the child and other workers paid rightful wages.

CORPORATES

I THINK THE BIG CORPORATE BUSINESS GROUP SHOULD COME TOGETHER IN SETTING UP VOLUNTARY ORGANISATIONS AT GRASSROOT LEVELS...OTHERWISE THIS WILL PERSIST....BECAZ THE INDIAN BUSINESS GROUP HAS SOCIAL RESPONSIBITIES...THEY CANNOT JUST SATISFY THEMSELVES WITH BACKING POLITICIANS AND BEREAUCRATS IN RUNNING THE COUNTRY....

Corporates are no better than the blood sucking expolitative individuals. I don't know why you want to define corporate goodness based on a handful of good companies like Tatas or Infosys or the likes.

Agreed Gautam...but I am not defining any corporate goodness...see i m trying to bring out the awareness part becaz...if u dont repay towards the society what u earn...then society will in return take it from u forcefully....I mean to sum up that Social Agenda should be also a part of corporate growth and culture....may be i may be wrong...but its my view....
