I couldnt help but notice some of the comments in this column; one of them in particular is;quote "Betaaa desi friend - most of the people on t hese forums live in the US. And a whole lot of writers are techie guys who have at some point lived and know the way the US runs"

I am not sure how do you define a techie guy; but going by the content of comments on many Rediff topics by the so called "techie guys";I must say that their intelligence levels must by at par with guys like Eienstein.

Most (not all) of the so called desi "techie" guys in US or other countries are nothing but FRAUDs entered those countries by fake papers or sent by Fraud companies from India.

by Sudhir Gokhale on Jan 04, 2009 09:08 AM  | Hide replies

My Credit Card gives me 1% rebate on all purchases and 3 % on all gas purchases. Last 6 months I have made on an average 2.3% on my expenses done using my credit card. My only discipline that I follow is every 15th day day I pay off all the balance.

request to my friends in US
by idea on Jan 04, 2009 08:37 AM  | Hide replies

My desi friends in US one request to you. However financially depressed you are, however much u have lost never lose heart.

If you lose it all come back to India. We all are still friends. We might make fun of you for some time or might say a harsh word sometime but donot take it to heart. We will celebrate holi and diwali together with no money at all.

You can surely rise again. I assure.

Whatever happens DONOT take any extreme steps like some stupid financially broken person did bad things to his own family. Be courageous to stand beside each other in time of need.

We are Indians we patiently wait for the trains to come for hours. And eventually the train comes. Have patience your time will come again.

Jai Shri Ram... Jai Hanuman !!
Swamiye Sharanam Ayappa !!

Credit Card
by Sudip Bhattacharjee on Jan 04, 2009 03:19 AM

Credit card is the backbone of US economy; it had been so since its invention and will continue to be like that in future. You cannot think being without credit card. It is not only true for people living in USA, but increasingly becoming similar for people living in India.

americans and credit cards!
by desifriend on Jan 01, 2009 11:22 PM  | Hide replies

Credit cards are good instruments, if people are responsible, stay within their income limit and pay off on time. But the scheming credit card companies do not make money if all users become responsible and pay on time. They make money if people spend more than what they earn and also make minimum payments. That is why they are blood suckers. Many americans are now stuck with credit card card companies and deeply in debt.I live in America and I see that people here, even those with meagre incomes spend like crazy on restaurants, travel, sporting events (tickets are very expensive), theme parks(one visit to Disney land for a family of 4 will cost you almost 300$ for tickets, parking and food) and people
use credit cards for all these expenses and quickly get into debt. Now this culture of spending now beyond your income and worry later culture is seeping into our Indians especially in cities. All credit card user should use it very carefully, and pay them off fully, to avoid the debt trap and the grip of the credit card companies and end up paying high interest.

People are intelligent enough to understand the benefits and perils of credit card usage, and like all things in life, it is a matter of choice. A choice to spend within their incomes or borrow and pay up later. I think most of the people should have no problem with that. But the point is the world is in an unfortunate (or shall we say america is in good position) position that it is, against their will, footing the bill of american consumers. It may be a richest nation but it is also the most indebted. since it is a self championed leader of market ecenomics, it should have left most of the financial institutions , even individuals, to go bust, for they made bad choices. but what do we see, US bailining out. Bull shit!!

I think it is 300USD per person and not total for 4 people to visit all parks at Walt Disney World at Orlando Florida. Please check before speaking. There are 6 parks and each park costs approx. 70USD to enter inside. I think you are new to america. And you dont understand economics. Please read and learn economics....you freakin conservative Leftists...cant think out of the box....if you cant take risk and borrow you can not come up from living paycheck to paycheck...Dont act like a saint.

You are absolutely right but you gotta understand that these spending habits keep the wheels of economy running. Imagine someone wanting to go to disney but not being able to go because they have no cash ... they would then have to wait until they accumulate some $1,000 for a family vacation ... sometimes people can't save, if they have money they spend.

Now, the credit card company steps in. They let you borrow to spend ... something that's a big NO NO in a budget conscious guy's dictionary. Then, these guys end up paying some 1,200 or maybe even $1,500 but that may be the only way for some of these guys to enjoy a family vacation as Disney.

Most americans can afford the $1500 vacations per year.. As for the ones with less income, overspending is the same in USA as in India.. How many times do you see daily wage laborers drinking liquor when they dont have money to feed their family. That seems to be the way people live in different situations.

Betaaa desi friend - most of the people on these forums live in the US. And a whole lot of writers are techie guys who have at some point lived and know the way the US runs. So who are you trying to say "I live in America and this is the way it runs" ? Sir..... if you had done this in the 1980's people would possibly have sat down next to you to listen - this is 2009.

Show me ONE credit card user who doesn't know the perils of credit cards usage ? And his/her spending habits are his own - U don';t have to tell them what they shud be doing and how the American economy runs based on credit. U don't like it, pack ur bags and go back to your village and spend in cash..... you village fair will accept cash. Why go to Disneyland if you are so worried about spending money with cards there. Like everything else Credit cards have their pro's and cons - no one is forcing you to follow the American way of living. If it works for them.... so be it. Who are you or me to comment about how / how much an American should spend on his card. Their higher education is also based on loans - so tomorrow u will have a problem of Americans getting into debt becoz of education and shouldn;t do it ?

Man your intellect has to be applauded. The point here is about credit card usage not about govt. policies and capitalism and bail outs. No one forced you to buy cars or use credit cards if you didn't want to. What the govt. should do or not do to bail out loss making companies is for the American people and senate to decide. Its about time you got urself checked if you can't understand the topic and digress to bring in topics which are not even being discussed here. Smell some fresh air dude. If u smell coffee, starbucks may bill you for it and u will start whining again. As for being an azzhoal - you just showed ur intellect my boy. Debating a point is not for you gutter chaaap - keep abusing.

Credit Card, a boon or bane?
by Jay Sundar on Dec 30, 2008 04:52 PM  | Hide replies

If judiciously and prudently used, it could be a definite boon;but, if u are one, reckless with your spending and fall a prey to market attractions, perhaps it is better for you to stir clear of credit card, as it could prove to be a trap from which u will never be able to walk free.I remember having read somewhere that at an average, Americans are supposed to have borrowed on their creditcards twice their annual income! For people to whom a credit card is a matter of convenience, it is still very good.

Just as any other financial instrument, a credit card is neither a boon nor a bane. It is a technical convenience that, ideally used, would allow you to better manage your finances and ease payments. It is up to the people using it whether they use, misuse or abuse this system

Maybe you are correct to an extent. I would like to differ a bit here, 'the 'convinience' part can be debit cards as well. Why it has to be credit cards?
I know that in the US one cannot survive without credit cards, the reason is not neccessarily 'lokking for credit', but credit ratings depend on credit cards, and credit ratings can make a hell lot of a difference in ones life in US.
