IITans like to carry the bloated ego from all the praise they get from their relatives and neighbours. Time these people grow up and stop using public tax money as a means to escape from India. Talking of global brand - no foriegn coworker in any company has ever heard of IIT. It is misleading the public to say IIT is a global brand.
What has happened to rediff..IIT is definitely a filter to pick the best in science ...BUt yeh kya hai yaar ki har week ek article IIT ne yeh kiya woh kiya..it smells arrogance...They claim they have created jobs if they become manager in a company...shud I say I careted jobs when I become manager..Bas ho gaya ...How many patents IIT has compared to MIT..

Yes IIT is not the best in the world but definately the best in India. If acknowledging that fact is arrogance then yes people are arrogant. Thats how it is played.

I believe SAVE HINDUISM is an IIT'an, showing the true color. I agree IIT'an are best in India, but when comes to global level, there are no where in TOP 50..

You say IITs maintain a high quality of research. To the best of my knowledge there is zer research in IITs.
Secondly, you say that two thirds of the IITians are in India. Well I can speak only for my class (Class of 2004). Nearly all of us are in foriegn countries (90 percent in the US). In fact we applied to the US universites very carefully so that we didnt have to fight for scholarships. The topper in our batch applied for MIT, Stanford and UC-Berkeley. The rest of us followed with the next higher schools.
IITs are recognized as a global brand only at select places. Every where else it is just another university. In one my early graduate level classes I had classmates that had completed their bachelors from third and fourth tier colleges. These students performed just as well as I did. So the bottom line is the education that you get at IITs is the same as you get elsewhere except the students that get into IITs are brilliant and hardworking.
No IITian has transformed India. IITians have never produced a Maverick. Of all the professors from IIT Chennai only Dr. Jhunjhunwalla is a brand name outside India.
Most(~97%) of the IIT teachers are not suitable to teach the students of that Caliber, otherwise they could do way way bettter than they are doing now.

An IITian is not made my teachings of techers. Its the environment, tradition, aspiration, calibere, facilities and direction that matters.
