TATA'sNano advertising budget is Over. Hence the delay!!
by TatyaPongya on Dec 16, 2008 12:57 PM

TATA'sNano advertising budget is Over. Hence the delay!! They "invested" in media (like the reporter of the above article) & got ample publicityat all verticles. The actual model is yet to be rolled out of the factory!!

I think Tata's advertising budget for Nano is now diverted to Taj renovation. Later on when Govt. / insurance co. reimburse it, that amount would be used for Nano. May be till that time, Nano launch will delay

BTW - There are worse states, CMs and politicians than what you find you Bengal. Take Maharashtra - Vilas Deshmukh, Rane, Sharad Pawar and Raj Thakeray. Just because there is prosperity in Mumbai does not mean that it is any better off. So please dont be a Bengali hater. We surely are not proud og Mamta but there are other M's in the country - Medha, Mayawati.

Withdrwing from Singur was nothing but a blunder business proposition by TATA when Gov of West Bengal extended full support in terms of giving all kind of measures including 200 cr tax free loan .More over Singur factory was almost completed and just productions to start with in 3 /4 months .I donot know what suddenly TATA changed their mind ,may be Gujarat might have lured with some kind of financial relief or some behind the scene activity linked to agitations by TMC ,role of other business rivals not to allow NANO to start early .But I can say TATA has done a blunder not to start NANO from Singur by some whimsical, behind the scene activities kind of decissions .West Bengal is not plagued by terrorists activities like Maharastra and others states .

Re: Blunder by TATA
by Sudip Bhattacharya on Dec 16, 2008 12:25 PM
Moumita,
You are absolutely correct. The reasons for TATA's decision, as I understand are:
1. Not a team decision but a emotional decision by and individual. An ego problem. When the factory was so near completion, a talk between TATA and Mamata would had have solved the issue through some assurance. Mamata in fact did not have an escape which she closed herself and also by CPI(M) by not allowing her to escape

2. TATAs thought BJP will come to power in next LS election and this car can only survive on sops. So with BJP government at the centre a BJP state could have given them all the sops they want. But now after this assembly elections I do not know what are their thoughts.

Anyway an impulsive, emotional and egotistic personal decision seldom pays in business. (Remember Mr Tata saying he wont withdraw even if somebody holda trigger at his temple..these are not business statements but ego trips. Also reminding of TATAs open letter in newspapers, He wanted West Bengal people to respond. Di he keep his website ready to accept the feedbacks. No, it is not a case)
Finally good that Nano did not come up. With the present global scenario, I doubt its success. Better they pulled out early. At least they can blame Mamata! Moreover, if business sense prevails, someone else would surely invest.

I fully support Sudip and his views. Before commenting against such a thoughtfull ,reasonable views expressed by Moumita and Sudip and with out any kind of biased fellow thinking ,without accusing CPM,TMC,Bengal,Bengalis,One should not forget the present role of MNS acitivities ,Naxal problems in Karnataka,Maharastra ,Bengal is a partly peacefull state .The best part of investing Bengal are two most stategic places in Eastern India like Nandigram and Singur which are near to most developed Port Kolkata and Haldia in entire South East Asia for business point of view to entire South East Asian countries,Australia,North and South Ameriaca,China are very cost saving due to near proxmity and lower transportations cost .One should understand why L.N.Mittal,Posco,Jindal are all quing up to start investing in Eastern Zone due to this cost factor only .Remember British ruled entire world from Calcutta for nearly 200 years successfully and factor was cost only .TATA has done a really blunder being one of the most respected Business house in India last 100 years .Blame must go to Ratan Tata and his un impressive ,vested interest Management Team .I request anybody want to counter my logic ,pl dont use any dirty words but some logical words which is welcome

Mr. Boral,
If Ratan Tata decided to move out of Singur due to the terrible situation which was created there, it is a smart business move. No business house can wait forever for a solution to an impasse created for mere votebank politics.
That they did not succumb to the pressure tactics employed by all political parties is a good thing.
The WB Govt. made an idiotic move by forcibly acquiring land and TMC made an equally dumb move by assaulting the factory workers and guards.
Net result is that we have lost out on an opportunity to industrialise the state.
What the British did a century or two back is not relevant in today's context. Historically speaking, Magadh used to be the power centre of India. Where is it now? Does it make sense to operate out of Magadh? Is Pataliputra still relevant in todays context? No. It isn't.
Ratan Tata heeded the advise of sane people who told him that WB is an unviable proposition for conducting business because of the scarcity mentality of the politicians in Bengal.
As a state, WB has fallen from grace due to over politisation of everything and militant trade unionism.
Strangely, educated people like you are still living under the impression that everything is alright. I shudder at the thought of having to view the assembly after the next election. If we get CPM back in power, TMC will destroy all attempts to improve business conditions. If we get TMC in power, then the destruction will be even faster!

Mr. Boral,
Much as i would love to indulge in a fanciful debate on cost of vegetables, the data you carry is grossly incorrect. I think you need to review your source of information. Having worked for long in both Delhi and Kolkata, i am fully aware of the cost of living of both cities.
Delhi is definitely more expensive than Kolkata, but not as high as 3 times or anywhere near it. Mumbai may be a different ball game altogether, though. And if you are staying in Delhi and paying that kind of money for vegetables, i suggest you change your place of purchase.
Abundance of agricultural products doesn't add employment to the educated. The educated need to get jobs, for which we need industries and that is precisely where WB is lagging behind. What is the use of lower prices, if you don't have the money to buy them?

Mr. Boral,
I have not stated that all other states are doing better. I have commented on the situation in WB only.
You are right, there are 2 ports in East which can be used for commercial activity and hence some business houses are interested in setting up industries here. However, the names you have mentioned earlier are facign stiff resistance from politicians and their "inspired" followers. politicians are using the latform for their personal gains and do not care about the development of the state.
WB is a shadow of its past and will continue to be so unless we have politicians who think beyond their personal gains and votebank.
Speaking of corruption, WB is ranked 7th in the Corruption Index amongst all Indian states. Which means that we have corrupt governance with no industrial presence! Extrapolating this data to review a industrialised WB, one can safely say that we will rank No. 1 in corruption if the state would actually get industrialised.
Again, let's not compare states. Limit yourself to WB only and tell me, apart from a few BPOs and Software companies, what employment has been generated in the past decade?

Anywhere else in the country is better you say? I disagree. Businesses like Nano cannot be run in states such as Bihar, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Kerala or even Delhi or Mumbai. The reasons would vary from poor infrastructure to extremely high cost of inputs.
Gujarat and Bengal both made sense due to having a fair infrastructure and lower input costs.

Be ready for dumping of imported cars.
There are millions of cars left unattended in different ports of USA, Japan and other european countries. There is nobody to buy even with 1 1 free offer. Be ready for dumping of imported cars at very nominal rates somewhere around June,2009. Well this well affect the market of Indian cars and Nano too. I believe very good cars will be available in 2-3 lacs... Just wait.
