sharing tax benefit from home loan
by amit thakur on Feb 19, 2008 06:11 PM

Hi Vikas,
I have two questions.
1) Me and my wife are coapplicant for the home loan but the property is registered on my name. now, can I modify the registry to include my wife name, so that she can also take the tax benefit? (Currently the registry is with the bank.)
2) Let say, if I am paying 3Lacs annual interset on home loan, so can me and my wife could share 1.5L each. or there is some upper limit?

I paid around 350000 interest on housing loan in this year, next year also I'll have to pay around 320000/- interest. We get tax relaxation up to rupees 150000/-, one of my friend informed me that if I give my home on rent then I will be benefited. But I did not understand the calculation and the rule. Lets say I'm paying 320000/- interest pa, so on 150000/- i do not pay tax and hence still the rest amount is 170000/- and lets say if I earn 120000/- from rent then i'll not be taxed on 120000/- and shal only pay pax on rupees 170000-120000=50000/-. is that true?
