Advantage Left
by Kaushik Basu on Oct 18, 2007 12:09 AM

The left has been hit and hit bad in WB but still I think it would be able to hold on its position, not because it is a group of excellent parties or policies or anything else but simply because of the fact that it does not face any challenge from any other political front in WB.

If these types of cases, I mean something of those proportions, happened anywhere else, The government would have lost heavily, but in WB no other political party has any major set up in smaller villages.

Nither the Congress nor the Trinamul have a very strong following to rout the Left, they would get only the anti votes, which would again be divided among the two. Whereas Left still have some amount of blind followers.

So the final result might be a much less vote percent for Left but getting routed I seriously doubt it.

This is a good article on the whole, but a few gaps will left a common reader asking for more. For example, with all the Billions of investment talked about, how many will actually get job? In a province where unemployement is rampant and about 1 crore registered unemployed yout is there, will employement of 25000 on total create any effect? Or are these just new ways of collecting cut money? Any time there is any work, CPM bosses get cut money. No one cares about employement. IT is the money invested that is all that matters as party gets a cut based on inflow of money and not on employment. Such issues need to be analyzed and brought to fore. Second, Buddha is not that saintly. He has been the police minister through all the years and have been at the helm of numerous human rights violation but he cares not much about them. He has this 'cultural' smokescreen which he uses nicely to ally his Mr. Hyde personality. Most of industrial projects have been hyped up real estate developments, except for a few. One needs to see real employment rather than bullshit talk.

Rediff should grow up

What a sketchy article. I mean rediff can go to any extend to taint the image of Left. This will of course get the anti left NRIs and right wingers a sort of a feel good factor for a few minutes. Apart from that rediff will not achieve anything. The article starts of with economic development in Bengal and suddenly the author diverges it to two trivial (as compared to the broader issue of economy) issue, which, according to him, will hamper economic development. And all this has a common thread of 'society focus' of the left. I guess rediff has a famine of issues to speak about. Why dont they focus on Government of Gujarat, for that matter. Issues there are far more serious in terms of society. Or are the social issues solely owned by the left, in which case, this article actually hidden praises the Left. All in all, a very sketchy article and a total waste of 5 mins.

Mr. Kole,
The issues are not trivial. CPM is very worried about these and it is evident in their response to both. In fact, they have panicked so much that the CM had to visit an ordinary guy's home after sitting on the issue for 23 days. Too many lies have been told and too many atrocities have been commited by CPM, but they always had the support of Muslims and rural poor. These two issues are rattling that support. Add Nandigram stalemate to the menu and any blind person will tell you the implications for the rulers. There is no doubt that CPM will win any election as long as it is held under CPM rule, but one can not outrule the effects that these incidents have.

If Bengal reaches to 10% of Gujarat, Left Front would remain in power for another 50 years. You leftists are the biggest escapists, keep pointing to Gujarat to hide your failures. Accept it no right thninking person anywhere in the world wants left. Only the dictators in Latin America still cling onto the leftist ideology. China your master is more capitalist than US.

Oops, did I not mention that reactions from anti Left will come out. For your knowledge, Latin America went the Left way democratically, and not by the means of revolution. This was after they tasted the sour fruits of Capitalism from America. And this is a recent development, which says that they did not cling to Leftist ideology, they changed towards leftist ideology. And always pointing towards China will not help argument. Its childish, and in an American way, its like "they are commies so they are the 'Bad Guys',". Give it a break. Fight rationally. You are assuming that CPM is a subsidiary of Chinese Government. This will not help the argument either. Speaking of Gujarat, we all know the human life index there. If Gujarat reaches at least 10% of what Bengal is in terms of human life index, BJP still has no future there as people have realised its fake promises and outdated issues.

Mr. Kole,
I do not speak for Manoj M's post but what you are saying is not truthful. You have no idea of West Bangal's human development situation, even if you are living there. Every family is affected by the left totalitariansim. Civil society is in disarry and educated class has been leaving the state in droves. You can not get into a school, build a dwelling, have a child or get a job without giving away money to the left goons. The communism is in name only. They are just a mafia party using Marx's name. Hope you know that since you are speaking 'for the left'.
As for South Aemrica, this is a temporary pheonomenon based on swelling money in some countries coffers due to oil price hike and US trade deficit. Take away the oil you will see the Chavez balloon flattening any day.

As for China, probably you also know the situation of ordinary folks there, with no security for life or job. Herds of people move from one company to another, once city to another and any protest is met with Police/Army atrocity, just the way Buddha tried ti muffle protest at Nandigram. Do you know how anyone speaking against the party is treated in China? Do you know how the expatriates are terrorized with threats of dire consequences for their dear ones living in China, if they open their mouth in USA? And lastly do you know that China sells body parts prisoners and arrested Falun Gong members? These are not US propoaganda as you do notn need propoganda against Hitler to prove that he is bad!

The left are just windbags who have mastered the art of proppaganda. Here they are helped by "friendly' editors and academicians who owe their position to the left. They repeat lies till they look like truth. One of the biggest lies that they have perpetuated is about social reforms in West Bengal. In fact West Bengal lacks in all areas of social development. The other is about the concern for minorities. It has come out that an average muslim in Gujarat (where they are supposed to be persecuted) is much better of economically than a muslim in West Bengal
