Problem is centuries of domination has confused the Indian nation. It still hasnt defined itself, are heavy borrowers and imitators despite being blessed with a brilliant civilization.

well the world bank has truely given right data till 2004 but with the rise in the scientific research in 2004 and then 2007 the data might be false as we have doubled the number of students and scientists in 2004 for research and now again in 2007 the increase is substansial. Also to add the publications in atleast three areas (chemistry, Physics, and Biochemistry) where I am sure India has incresed by a substainstial amount (more than 150%). so please cheack and calculate on recent developments
Facts are really embrassing. This time is time of technology and if we leg behind then we will not feed our comming generations properly. US is world leader today because they are superb in techology. China is growing faster then India because they invest more then India in technology. See we did good in IT and millions of people got job in IT field. Think if IT industry were not here what would be condition in India. If IT outsourcing stops then India shining will gone in one month, most of shopping malls will be closed. Yes check the fact most of the malls is running due to IT professionals. So we need to develop some indigenous things which will save us from some disasters. Think if also advance in other areas then how many new jobs we will have if just IT can provide millions of jobs. We made very big noise when Indian cricket teams wins but you know every year there are noble prizes also distributed? India consist 20% populations of world but how many nobles we have. We proud of Sunita Williams and Kalpana Chawla, but think how we will be proud if we send Salma and Seeta through our own rockets. We Indian and well as our govt also need to wake up otherwise will always leg behind. How long we will celebrate the NRIs (non Indian citizen) space oddessy?
R&D is risky business - it costs money and there's no sure profit-making product at the end of it all, so why do your own R&D when you can just lease it from the OEMs for less?

Thats why we have Ambassdor car manufactured by Hindustn Motor. Although HM was one of few asian car manufactures in 40s-50s. Now we know where HM stands. It all because they never spend money on R&D. India is suitable for greedy businessmen and in-efficient government.

thats the sad thing with India, that the people doesnt understand what research can give.. they believe to remian copycats, as they always were.. but they dont understand the other half of the story ..yes u can copy others but u can do that after a gap of 10-50 years, so keep on using obsolet technology which others invented 50 years back and which is age-old..and be happy..
What's the Big Deal then? Why does Rediff take Petty Things & Try to Sensationalize it? As it is, Rediff's Level is Very Low n Cheap, being A Frivolus Gossip Blog.

the big deal is that this is holding india back. Helping to keep india backward nation.
What's important then if not this? Criket scores? gossip about actors/actresses?
The sad thing is the Govt wastes so much money on frivolus and corrupt stuff on things that supopsedly help the poor. But, R&D, which has demonstrably uplifted the quality of life of hundreds of millions (pharmecutical, agriculture, technology etc.) is completely ignored by the politiicans.

thats bcoz our politicians dont even understand what science and technology is.. how many of them you think have that much of outlook? what more u can expect from that group of people average education of whom will not be even 12th pass?
