Time for Universal Health care plan
by tom tomm on May 29, 2007 08:00 PM  | Hide replies

Every Indian citizen should get health insurance. Must create a National Health Insurance Exchange to monitor insurance companies in offering the coverage. Let see a Plan. Any body can contribute to this

1.      Every person should pay Rs.2000 per year. (Note there is Billion plus people in India all are not going to visit doctors or hospitals every day)

2.      Virtually all businesses should pay a percentage (Eg. 2% )

3.      Add sales tax (eg. 1% or 2% will bring billons to the system)

4.      Co Pay should be mandatory to visit doctors (Eg. 50/- will bring down unnecessary visits)

5.      Pay a premium for class of Hospital A, B, C, D they visit. (Eg. Free for D, 2% for C, 5% for B, 10% for A of total cost)

Those who can't afford coverage would get a subsidy on a sliding scale depending on their income.

Thats an unfair statement. Mere 600-700Rs would give poor acces to 50000Rs of medical bills. I have seen many people who wouldnt like to spend 5000 towards medical expenses and refused/avoided medication. Couple of people I forced were thankful later on. But what the insurance should do is pay first and not later.

Dear Tom Tomm,

Your ideas are simply too great to be implemented!

Do you know what is the best form of governance in the world? .......its Socialism.. but critics say: Its too good but not practical!

How all the business would pay a percentage and who would evaluate whether they are paying fair amount?

Even the people who have much higher earnings would like to take advantage of 'subsidized treatment on sliding scale' because no one knows their real income.

If 'nice' things were really pratical, income tax department would have been collecting 'fair' tax from businessman instead of milking service sector.

People in service sector pay fair tax (more or less) just because their income is taxed at source!

What you can really implement in this country. Please come-up with something that really works!

Regards,
Ashish Jain

Mr. Ashish,
You may misunderstood the following.
%u201CEven the people who have much higher earnings would like to take advantage of 'subsidized treatment on sliding scale' because no one knows their real income.%u201D

Every body have the option to pick Which Doctors OR which Hospital (Hospital Class A, B, C, D. ) should visit depending on their income. Eg. If your treatment cost Rs. 100,000 in Class A hospital you have to pay from your pocket Rs. 10,000 which is 10%).

But most of this contributed money will goto corrupt politicians..

We should have co pay and cashless policy.. We are seeing everything in paper but nothing is practical..

Existing cashless hospitalization and mediclaim policies are bogus.. They have 100's of exclusions..

We need to have a grass root level plan from government..

My 2 Cents,
Peace,
Ramakrishna

Very True .. they have many exclusions which they never disclose at the time of selling the plan. Very recent experience with ICICI Lombart makes me feel cheated. I have been paying for insurance for myself and my wife for two years. And very recently for hospitalisation i was surprised to hear their funny excuses !

Just deposit the money like recurring continiously every month / year whatever you are paying as policy amount. this alone will help more than any other policies, because this amount you can utilise for any illness!! if you are not into any problem, the whole money is urs!

Who is responsible for high Medical bills?
by Qx on May 29, 2007 04:46 PM

Is it inflation or cost of high of diagnostic machines??? NO... THESE ARE NOT THE REASON FOR HIGHER BILLS.

The bills are high because Doctors are unable to know what the disease it and even after doing tens of test and diagnostics they are still blank in their head. For every machine they get into their hospital they have to use it compulsory and generate money from it. So who will pay ???? the poor patients.

Its a shame that a noble profession like medicine has become the worst profession when the Doctors and the learned cheat people of their money, without justification.

Wake up people and make the doctors accountable for what wrongs they do. And believe me they do lots of wrong things and still the patient has to pay for their wrong doings.

Very good advice! If you fall seriously ill, go to a homoeopath. He will give you a few sugar pills, virtually gratis. His medicine will enable you to die peacefully, without having to spend much.

Medical Bills
by jayrupa g on May 29, 2007 02:35 PM

The problem with todays modern way of life is that, people look only into non existing solutions for health problems. Ways of preventing oneself with the diseases should be at the helm and not of inviting health problems and then seeking solutions. Other than accidents i dont think one should ever be going to modern medical doctors. I have spent lacs trying to get cure for simple but nagging problems like Gastric,Liver problems. By doing small changes in lifestyle and food intake, i have saved myself more than i could have asked for. regards Raman

K NAGARAJAN
top priority for union health minister
by K NAGARAJAN on May 29, 2007 02:20 PM

I THOUGHT THE MINISTER SHOULD MAKE THE HEALTH INS COMPULSORY FOR ALL AND THE EMPLOYERS SHOULD PAY FOR ALL OF THEIR EMPLOYEES AND FOR THE UNEMPLOYED THE GOVT. SHOULD BEAR THE COST. FOR BUSINESSMAN, WHO INVARIABLY PAY IT, SHOULD BE DEDUCTED AS PART OF IT AND PAID TO THE INS COMPANIES.

HEALTH MIN SHOULD CONCENTRATE ON THIS ON A TOP PRIORITY.
