Spiderman 3 is an exception not a norm.
by Bollywoody on May 16, 2007 08:09 PM

Spiderman has a big draw in India since previous two generation and current generation grew up with it.

Harry Potter will be successful but mainly in English because Kids have read mostly english books.

Out of all others only Rush Hour3 and Pirates and Die hard has some chance but that too mainly in English version watchers. Pirates 2 was a bad movie and that will affect Pirates 3 worldwide.

Spiderman 3 was successful worldwide it was an exception not a norm.

We must remember that many of the Hollywood 'blockbusters' have flopped in India too especially in regional languages.

Wake up Bollywood

HAHAHAHA ... finally :))
Hopefully this threat will wake them up, and they will start focussing on the quality of the "Blockbuster releases" (as rediff calls them).

Sonia,

I think we need not underestimate Bollywood it has its own identity in the world.

Also the ratio of hits to flops is almost the same as in Hollywood.

Quality has of Bollywood has improved over time on the other side there are many really bad Hollywood movies too.

If most Bollywood movies are love stories with lot of drama family and some action then most of Hollywood moives are basically cops and robbers stories with a lot of gloss.

Also, compare the budgets and viewership Hollywood can afford to do what they do.

A hero and heroine in Bollywood should be able to dance, fight, ride, and of course act to be successful. Client Eastwood and Al Pacino can act like Amitabh Bachchan but they cannot dance, sing, like him.

Alarm bells better start ringing for Bollywood !!
by ben kanobee on May 16, 2007 12:19 PM

A major shake is in the offing, for too long Bollywood has taken the easier path, even the newer realeases and their much touted "fresher" subjects are basically the same old kitcsh in a newer package. Bollywood still follows the cookie cutter approach and that approach is going to bite them back real bad. All these Hollywood movies mentiones are their "masala" genre, targetting mainstream audiences worldwide, but notwithstanding that sameness, there are superlative elements that will connect the average desi Hollywood firstimers the timing, screenplay, choreography, other sublteties and what will happen that they start differenciating and a time will come when they will start appreciating the true genius in a movie, then you will a dubbed "A river runs through it" "Lost in Translation" or a "Remains of the day" Its a race against time....either Bollywood gets it act together or just sit on the sideline and watch. We had the privilige of to learn from the master, Satyajit Ray to teach an entire generation...and we learnt how to script "mela mein gum ho gaya"... even the newer movies are pretty dissappointing. I watched a Sunny Deol movie the other day "Big Brother"....Holy cow, unbelievable...my jaw remained open throughout...even Spiderman 5 wont be able to do that....

huh? Not much difference in reading off the subtitles or listening to the dubbed translation, one would say. the subtlety is gonna be lost either way, not much you can do about it.

I agree with Aman here.

of course you don't learn language to watch one or two movies. But people who don't know English miss out on many many good movies.

Also subtitles are better than dubbing because most of the dubbings in different language are horrible and they miss the nuances of acting.

So, with subtitle you know the real feelings portrayed by original character.

It seems the english have still followed their policy of divide & rule.

the dubbing of english films in regional is only killing our so dying industry. As it is we have so few good films coming then we have dubbed english films as a threat.
