Though Mozilla may not be a microsoft killer it is surely going to be a IE killer. The process has already started and unless IE improves itself significantly nothing its gonna be no where. The customizability and safety of MF is far greater than IE has. Not to forget Opera too. My rating would be: 1. Firefox 2. Opera 3. IE(or should I say avant?)

Very true! Thanks Prashant, for your invaluable attempt at educating the folks at Rediff. To call Firefox (a browser that survives more or less on support) a Microsoft killer (a company with a market capitalization of around US $ 300 billion) is not only foolish but also stinks of ignorance. You've kinda hit the nail on the head. While Opera still struggles to increase its market share to 15%, Firefox still faces problems with its memory footprint. Though I personally prefer Firefox to IE (Opera is way behind to be even considered), Firefox is a bad choice for any operating business model. After years of attempting to make their LMSs compatible with Firefox and Opera, scores of frustrated LMS developers will tell you why IE is more often than not the *only* choice for developers and end users.

firefox rocks!
by rayker rayker on Mar 05, 2007 10:40 AM

I've been using firefox ever since it began its journey as a separate entity from the ashes of netscape. the mozilla foundation has done a fabulous job. ive been happy with the mozilla browser even when it had lots of bugs, and early developmental stages - because it offered choice, better security even when it wasn't stable (but much much better than MS I.E. nevertheless) it had plugins and addons, and overall the reason for the browser market to be rejuvenated. if not for firefox - microsoft would never have hurried its development of IE. the were not bothered about the million hles in IE, they were not bothered about people suffereing with the result of malware, viruses, etc etc. and now they come as saviours with windows defender and other AV/ firewall etc etc. people all over the world should gangup and rebel against thier monopolistic practices. we need choice, and we need MS to have a compititor. only then will there be any development, and only then will we not be charged absurd rates for software - for ex: for the cost of windows vista ultimate edition and ms word 07 alone you can buy one helluva lot powerful PC! down with monopolists

MS ROCKS

Linux has been around for some time but still MS dominates. MS is a combination of Marketting technical abilities. There are so many good products available in market which are much better than MS but MS has the art to sell things and not many coz know how to sell. When MS started IBM was going so strong but it lacked vision but MS had the vision to have pc on every desktop and they have done that. just giving good product aint enough u gotta have vision and some cheap tricks to fool the public

yeps man, just giving good product aint enough, rather even if u have pretty useless and bad product, you can sell. ppl like u must support such companies... and anyways, today, anything goes in name of art. so your MS has the art of selling... and what did you talk about vision... a distorted one at that too... i feel you are employed by MS. those or fools, only two types can support MS. (well, i estimated you as employed, not as fool. but whichever is worse, you decide.)

If it rules, why does it need support. I guess 'volunteering' doesn't take you far. Though I personally prefer Firefox to IE, I refrain from posting immature comments. By the way, Firefox has its own set of problems. Even though it's very popular among youngsters, it's not a very good business choice.

How much you know about business choice Mr. Tayde. I think you forgot the phrase which says a journey of thousand miles begins with single step.

Firefox has not reached at its apex yet. its just begining and not to mention very impressive beginning. Open source concpt is gaining momemtum and definately its moving in positive direction. Either you work for MS or you dont have long vision, thats why you are so sceptical about Firefox.
you said its popular among younsters, i agree with you, but i am disappointed that you coudnt find the reason. the reason is IE comes default installed on 90% PC share in world and many people they dont even know which OS they are using. youngsters know the benefits of using firefox and thats why they use and ofcourse its gaining its popularity among other aged people as well.So it would be stupid of you, if u become so much passimistic about firefox. If firefox has problem then IE has bigger problems.

Hi Suraj, thanks for your response. I agree with a lot of things you say, especially about Firefox reaching its apex and gaining popularity with 'other age groups'. I hope this happens, and soon. I have followed the Linux open-source development for more than 10 years. I've been working with IE since 1996 (6 years before anyone thought of Firefox). I've witnessed a lot before I grew 'skeptical'. I do not work for Microsoft, and personally prefer Firefox over IE.

I apologize if I offended you, but I've been rather cold about open source development, including that of Firefox. The compatibility of a browser and its working makes a direct impact on my industry and on my work. Scores of frustrated eLearning LMS developers (and end users) will tell you why IE is the only choice they have. You'll witness similar arguments from banking/payment gateway developers. Review any banking/eLearning browser statistics, and you'll know.

I just hope Firefox (and similar entities) present a good solid competition for Microsoft. This will ensure a good product range for developers and users, and make them available at reasonable prices. IE's popularity, though helped by default installations on Windows PCs, is and remains undisputed in any business environment. In fact, 'IE coming default installed on 90% of PCs' is not gonna change for a long time. It's what happens when a giant with a US $ 300 billion market capitalization supports a flagship browser. Though I may not be a skeptic, I'm not a believer either.

You will come back to Window
by N Venugopal on Mar 05, 2007 10:30 AM

Im am avid user of Linux and many open source programs. Mozilla firfox 2 is a very good product much better than IE, The success of Mozilla firefox-2 is it avilability on window operating systems. All said and done but at the end of the day I land at Windows platform. The problem with open souce is too many applications for single activity. Mozilla firefox is an exception.

Its good to see Indian media(which is so MS centric), taking interest in Firefox. It is simple to use browser with tons and tons of functionality, which can be highly configured.

Mozilla is surely a great Browser, but I can't think of how it would kill Microsoft's Market.

But do watch out for Ubuntu (ubuntu.com) i have been trying it for almost one year and i feel it IS really a potential challenge for Microsoft. It has great looking GUI and a lot of great functionalities. and it is free.

Maite!

Well, this is a big write up! Anyway, I have read a lot of stuff about the would-be MS killer and all that stuff. The fact still is that many 'anti-MS' people like me, even today can't do without Windows!

MS is too aggressive and a dominant leader
