Bursting the air of invincibility ...
by Sri T on Jun 06, 2007 08:35 AM  | Hide replies

This coup that pushed Nandan out is Politics over Performance ... and this can only result in Infosys slipping into the company of mortals.

It won't even be three quarters when the premium for EPS that Infosys carries will slip back.

At a time when the $-Re conversion is slipping, costs are rising and there is real competion from global services companies in our own back yard ... the Infosys leadership choose to pick a poor leader to take them forward ... and the co-founders have decided to put their personal ambitions and egos above the company's interest. It's one thing to ride on the coat tails of NRN and Nandan ... it's another to have the buck stop at you ... 3 quarters is all it will take for their illusions to melt away.

Sad to see such a crucial transition being messed up like this ... NRN wake up ...

Infosys

Some people jump to criticise when Infosys is in the news. We can find all sorts of talk like tech coolies etc. I find this unjust.

Before these firms came along, highly qualified had to leave India as the pay in India was enough to make ends meet only. Top IITans and MBA's even went to places like Nigeria to work for unprofessional family outfits and faced sarcastic comments - why should my children go to Harvard when I can employ them for couple of thousand dollars? The bosses were generally uneducated but wordly wise in terms of making money by sqeezing the empolyees to their bones. They always played on uncertainties as the alternative for the latter was to return home, head bowed. I know a smart IIM MBA, Ahmedabad who slogged for years in Nigeria with starting pay $800pm. There were no dearth of people queing to take up these jobs as we were - beggars.
Others like CAs were humiliated when undergoing the course for no pay. They had to even run family errands for their bosses.

What a difference firms like Infosys have made, given an image to Indians as software whiz kids. Nobody is forcing anybody to work in Infosys. The door is always wide open and the world is the oyster. Let us be more forgiving and learn to appreciate the good points than blind criticism.

People who have been wronged, please start your own, joining with six others and see where you stand. Seeing the aggression of some, it can turn out with bloodied nose and missing teeth.

Nobody has any objection in IT Engineer earning good money. The problem starts when they start showing off that earning to people of other profession like Doctors and CAs. When they do so, they forget that Doctors and CAs are not bonded to work that is coming from USA which is coming primarily because these IT Engr are providing cheap and skilled labour force. This could be shortlived if some other country comes with better alternative. On the other hand CA and Doctors can have their own private practices more so CA have statutory powers given by the laigislation of parliament of India. They are at par with secretary of Govt of India in rank.

the only thing the CAs do is it hide black money of rich people, devise some way for them so that they dont pay tax. Robbing country of valuable tax. Doctors indulge in short of practises even killing girl child in womb. Atleast IT people are not murderer.

Amit,

Please do not generalise. There are black sheep anywhere. Some do indulge in criminal actvities, who should be exposed and punished.

Despite hostile climate in our country, I always admire the majority who abide by law and give genuine advice be he be a doctor, engineer or whatever. CAs can adise tax planning. This is done everywhere and is legal. How many doctors indulge in killing? If I were a doctor, I will never even entertain such thoughts, like I hope, the majority of them.

Like in all spheres of life many succumb to easy ways to making money. I just appeal to them. A softest pillow is a clear conscience. One who practises that will be the happiest person.

Many people do that and I believe thay are the majority.

Time to stop cribbing and start working!
by Neena Sharma on Jun 05, 2007 06:21 PM  | Hide replies

I am amazed reading people's comments and views when they say that Infosys has created Tech coolies in the country. Companies like Infy, TCS and Wipro have contributed tremendously in brining India on the world map now its the turn of next generation of companies and people to take the momemtum forward. There is no dearth of opportunity or resources for a right vision/innovation/idea. Its high time that we leverage on our existing technical experience and learn new skills to move up in the value chain.
Leaders like Narayan Murthy resume faith back in the people and inspire them to achieve big. Imagine if Indian software story wouldn't have happened then what we would have been left today with? Empty hands and directionless?

India was brought on world map by people who migrated from India in 40s, 50s and 60s. They went to USA/UK and proved to native population that they are not only hard worker but also quality worker. They were from all professions but mainly from medical. Even today, medical profession is the most respected profession in India and in USA. These IT Coolies are getting work because they are cheap and completely depend on work from outsourcing.

Everyone knows how people in medical profession, not all but many rob their patients with their unethical ways and you talk about repect. the same doctors are doing all sorts of practise like infanticide etc, atleast IT people are far far better, not immoralist and full of hypocracy like you people. In USA ophthamlologists etc lobby not to increase seats for ophtalmology, so that less doctors are produced and they can due to lack of sufficient doctors can charge as much as possible. I beleive atleast IT industry is honest and does not suck blood of poor people like you

Another IITian became CEO and Co-Chairman without inventing anything!
by Chola The Greatest in the Universe on Jun 05, 2007 01:56 PM  | Hide replies

Another story of an elite IITian who suck the hard-work of ordinary Engineers and made them as slaves of Westerners.

Thanks for that and you have become billionaire.

But I appreciate Infosys for good corporate governance but thats about it.

Sir, how many patents Infosys filed so far? I would be happy to know that detail.

try securing the admission in IIT by giving its entrance exam, you would know that it is the toughest exam in world, people like son of Narayan Murthy could not get admission in IIT and went to cornell, IVY league for their education, but ignorant like you neither understand this, nor about computer science, if you call people working in IT industry as coolies than you are worst than that, since IT job needs lot of analytical skills, but I am sure the kind of work you do, does not require any brain, any moron can do your work.

Very Evasive Answers
by on Jun 05, 2007 10:12 AM

All the questions raised at the begining of an article were either not answered or answered vaguely. It appears Infosys follows musical chairs for the post of CEO. All the talks about meritocracy are eye-wash. By making Kris a CEO, does it wants to convey Infosys has not been able to recruit a more capabale people than its founders? If that is the case, why Mr Murthy keeps talking about we should hire a person than ourselves, system should be based on meritocracy. It is another instance of board not carrying out its tasks. I am sure if it had happened at some other organization we would have got reams of article on misuse of power, lack of corporate governance etc.
Now, people must be wondering who is next - Sibu. I am sure he might be threatening that either he become CEO or ??
