ppl before commenting here should visit the nearest university and see the condition of research labs and scholars there.
scientists in India from well funded research institutes are publishing their work in world No 1 journals like NATURE. Even if 5% of funds given to defense are given for research in university and bureaucracy is reduced vision 2020 will become reality.

THE BEST SCIENTISTS FROM INDIA HAVE LEFT TO AMERICA

only those whose visa has been rejected remain behind

TWO SCIENTISTS FROM INDIA HAVE WON NOBEL PRIZE FOR USA (KHORANA, CHANDRASEKHAR) WHILE ONLY ONE HAS WON NOBEL PRIZE FOR INDIA (C.V.RAMAN) AND THAT TOO IN 1930 BEFORE INDEPENDENCE.

SHOWS CLEARLY INDIAN SCIENTISTS PREFER TO WORK FOR AMERICA BECAUSE MERIT IS RECOGNIZED

Capitalism and innovation
by Biplab Pal on Jul 21, 2007 12:30 PM  | Hide replies

Many bloggers questioned lack of innovation in Indian industry culture. Quite rightfully so. But what triggered innovation in USA? Its education system? sorry--US education is one of the worst in the world when I compare it with what I have received in India. But still US leads? why? Capitalism. They are paying me quite high even when there is huge risk in what we are trying to innovate--there are risk investors in USA, who loves to invest in technology, new business because it is a kind of baiting for them. That is called capitalism-rational greed. Take the risk to invest in innovation--which means pay very high salary to the innovative technologists and you will get what you have paid for. That's my two cent from being educated in India and working for innovative R&D in USA. It is all about money.

all with merit will be rewarded in america

anyone with merit will always succeed in america, there is no need to pull strings, pay a bribe, know a minister or have an uncle in an powerful position.

america is top in education (70% world top universities), business (300 largest corporations), science (270 nobel prizes), sports (2400 olympic medals)......because MERIT is given the greatest importance.

all with merit are welcome in america.

You are wrong, connections are more important in America. Bush administration is full of people with connections and no qualifications. Major corporations have executives with absolutely no merit. A guy with merit will probably end up making around 100K as a researcher which is the same that someone without merit makes. Very rarely will he make millions without the right connections.

You have very good insight into the R&D process though you are based in India. Quite rare to see someone like you.

What an idiot

You don't know anything about American education system right. The whole world goes to America to study, while we creat bookworms in India.

Most people come to study in the US with the idea of working here. Ask them to sign a statement saying they will leave US for 10 years after studying and won't take up jobs here.Lets see how many come.

Misinformation/hyperbole...
by Maximus Decimus Meridius on Jul 21, 2007 11:08 AM  | Hide replies

First of all, RFID is not new - it's been around for decades, though commercialization of this technology has started only in the last 10 yrs. It's been in use for 5 yrs or so, in limited amounts. What the Microsoft development center is doing is not research, just development - they didnt invent RFID! This is admittedly better than the prod support and maintenence that the big 3 of Indian IT do, but it isnt research. MS has it's own research wing called Microsoft research, in redmond, washington.

"Most of Intel's latest chips and processors have been designed extensively by its researchers in Bangalore." - This is absolute BS. The core/core2 architecture was based out of the Pentium M architecture that was developed in Haifa, Israel. Core2 was developed in the US(Folsom/Portland/SantaClara... not sure which). The Itanium processor is done at FortCollins, Colorado. The India dev center does some of the chipsets for desktops and servers, not the processor. If at all they touched the processor, it might have been for validation. And the chipsets are decidedly simpler and IS NOT RESEARCH! This is just development.

India must get into research, but to do that, we need to develop infrastructure to produce researchers. Apart from IISc, no indian institution produces PhDs of decent caliber.

We are so easily pleased with ourselves, arent we? Tendlya makes one 100 against a second string attack and we go, he is back. the best in the world, blah blah...

Very appropriately summed up the current status. Great!

However, the future of India need not be the same. A few of us, Knowledge-entrepreneurs, fron US and India are developing Knowledge-Matrix of multidisciplinary professionals and knowledge-entrepreneurs. Anyone wishes to join is welcome.

You may visit www.Entrepreneur-india.com for becoming a K-partner in our K-matrix.

India needs to empower and engage youth towards original thinking and prepare them to make the idea a success by making money, through pioneering enterprises, like Jamshetji Tata and his successors did through several first of its kind, in creation of wealth for self as well as for the nation as whole.

I am not a taker. I managed to stumble upon this article by chance, but yeah, what a chance!

I know many of the people mentioned in the article. Srini Koppolu was my director when I was in Microsoft. Now that I am in IBM IRL, Sumit Mittal is my colleague and I am one of the people implementing IBM Business Finder with Mittal. Potentially it can be even more wonderful than potrayed here. And it is totally made by my colleagues (and me).

This is my pet proof against the fact that it is not made up - whether you believe or not is your call.

Get along...
by Kevin on Jul 21, 2007 10:27 AM  | Hide replies

Indians are good in working as bits and pieces.
Defintiely true in science and technology!!! But the out-of-the-box thinking is no where near to the required level. It has to be cultivated at the undergraduate level. I do not agree that a guy coming up with the best percentile in GATE/TOFEl/GRE and other copetitive exams is the best one in the bussiness. The way we take the course and the exams is shi*...only looking to surpass the others and score better than others.Mear spoon-feeding. No applied understanding. Hope the days are ahead with a quality based education and its applications in research and development. The future belongs to the people with innovative ideas.

Hopefully the present brigade of researchers and innovators also become entrepreneurial enough to establish their own start-ups and encourage more minds to think innovatively, giving India an edge in future technologies.

Most of the comp sci research is being done outside india. This author is no clue about the stuff being done outside india.
Outsourcing is not the same as research.

Parker,
whats your big problem here?
The author has said that India is doing good as a R&D center and Indians are now thinking innovatively. He hasnt talked about other countries and neither has he hasnt compared other countries to India.
Nowhere in the article does he say that outsourcing and research are the same.
Take this article as a positive push on some bright minds to drive them towards research and innovation in India.
You can neither think positively nor push yourself to think innovatively and have no right to criticise someone who is trying to create some optimism.

What original comes out of India? It is only
contract work or copying something after it has
been successful in India. Yeah, body-shopping and
outsourcing are the only two original concepts that have come out of India.

Why does media not take a critical view?
Because, the writers dont have a clue as to
what the industry is about, I guess.
