Dear Gopal Sharma,

The village of Gulmarg is situated at 8500 feet and not 13000 !

The mountain in the backdrop of Gulmarg where the ski slopes begin at the highest level is at an elevation of about 13000 feet.

I have visited Gulmarg in Dec 2005 and the place is awesome...The Snow covered land with the mountain background looks awesome...I feel not many people know that they can visit Kashmir which leads to lower number of Tourist...If advertised, the number can increse drastically...After all kashmir still is a paradise and one needs to be there to realise it...:) The Indian army is doing a gr8 job in the valley, though they often get opposed by the local residents.

Re- Why new-look Gulmarg is drawing tourists

I do hope that the tourist department of J&K addresses the following problems.

We need affordable hotels (in Rs.200 to 800 per day bracket) and affordable Restaurants (in Rs.100 per day per person for B/f, lunch, Tea /snacks, Dinner). Because of the prohibitive costs most of the tourists make a day trip to Gulmarg from Srinagar. Also eroute Gulmarg from srinagar our guides/driver do tell of important places. As a tourist we would like to confirm these from other sources.Hence there ia need to update the tourist Dept. web site about these data. We also need literature on best skiing practices for the novice and best practices to beat cold related conditions.
Things I appreciate with J&K tourism are seperate tourism police, fixed guide rates and reasonable winter clothes/shoes.
