God and religion are distinct.
Will and Wisdom
by God and religion are distinct. on Mar 02, 2007 05:15 PM

Everything is RELATIVE for a common man.

Government should distribute 20 kg rice or wheat at Rs 2 per kg per ration card through Public Distribution System

1. Will have a CASCADING effect on remaining food items and will help in reducing the prices and inflation.
1. Will create demand for agricultural products and will PREVENT farmers suicide.
3. Will stop 350 million people STARVING every day for a meal.

Please suggest any alternative solutions you might want to.

Budget 2007

If the exemption limits had been raised to Rs. 2.25 lakhs for senior citizens, Rs. 2.00 lakhs for women and Rs. 1.50 lakhs for others, with a decrease in the age of senior citizens to 60 years,it would have been a better budget.

Budget 2007

I miss Nani Palkiwala's speech. He is a genius to explain the intricacies of the Budget. There is no one like him to interpret the budget for the common citizens. Though I was young, it was a pleasure reading the prints. So eloquently presented.

Excessive concern on inflation
by on Feb 28, 2007 07:06 PM

Basic economics tells us that more important than headline inflation is the driver for it.
For India, where 60% of the population is dependent on agriculture, it's good if that section gets more for its toil. From that perspective rising food prices should not be a grave concern. Food prices become less of an issue if the total spend on food as a %age of salary goes down for an average family.
The food prices are bound to grow in the long run also, as rising price of land means higher opportunity cost for the farmer.
Also if the GDP per capita, and more importantly average family income, rises and moves towards the world average, the cost of living is bound to follow suit. Indian food prices are still no more than 10% of the average world food prices.
Bottomline is that as long as the average man can afford to eat healthy, the nation should not worry about higher inflation triggered by higher food prices. After all the farmers should finally get what they deserve.
