good to be #2 not #1

Many of the behavioural attributes described above may make for a good #2, a COO - to be a successful CEO requires a person to have that extra edge in terms of both intellectual as well as personality attributes, what we call charisma. These folks who reach the top and stay at the top also need to be having a high ego , high need to break existing paradigms , break conventions , relentless energy and are usually very bad losers. They also develop a loyal team which stays with them whichever organisation they go to. Many who do not have these qualities and have become CEOs by default do not usually last very long because they run out of tricks fast and board loses faith in them soon enough as they do not have the intellect to keep reinventing themselves every year.

How a Indian CEO does it
by vinay bhagwat on Feb 21, 2007 10:18 AM  | Hide replies

Most highlighted individual CEO's are from pioneer industry which makes a person feel to join them at any cost. However there are quite a good example of CEO's ruining a excellent company. The result can be narrowed to two atributes viz . Ego & bad team. I have just quit company whos owners espire to be No 1 insurance company in private sector and in their persuit, hired the best CEO but equally lethargic team to supprot him. Worst, the CEO had the guts to inform that I am like Julius Ceaser, unfotunately I have 9 Brutu's not 1. This effects the morale of the team , straight down. Most honest employees wonder if the CEO's team is working for competition !
