Great news
by raj on Dec 14, 2007 03:56 AM  | Hide replies

Good wishes and it is a great news for all of us. India shining and will continue to shine

This also highlights the fact that US market and Americans are open and fair in providing opportunity and accepting best talents from around the world with no resrvations.

This trait is something we should appreciate as well.

Yes, it benefits US, but US can always take a position that top US compnay CEO must be native born . I'm sure US too has many smart brains like India does.

US not going this protectionism route and remaining open to the world for talent is indeed what has made US the economic super power.

I don't think average Rediff realizes what position Vikram Pandit has acheived...Citibank's market capitalization is two times Saudi Arabia(Richest Arab nation' annual GDP. It is a fantastic acheivement by any standards and not just Marathis but all Indians should feel proud of him.

Don't compare him with achievement of Amartya Sen, who is a useless Academic who got nobel prize only because there were complaints that all the Economics Nobel Prizes have been going to Capitalistic oriented ones and they wanted to give a consolation prize to a leftist economist. Wall Street make fun of his nobel prize saying "We are used to having terrorists like Yasser Arafat win Nobel...so a useless/harmless Economist willing Nobel is alright". Amartya has never created wealth or created one single job in his life..rather he has been living on our tax dollars or rupees.

While it does feel good to know that he is of Indian origin, don't you think it will be more prudent to celebrate his elevation to the CEO level only after he successfully untangles Citi's mess and turns the troubled-company around from its mounting losses?

and i agree fully with jay walker. aren't the hindus just amaizing when given freedom. time for the hindus in india to demand freedom from their govt which is trowing up all sorts of barriers and choking their progress.

I think there's every reason for parents to be extremely delighted. Its inspiring to all Indians to think big and lateral. World has recognized that Indian brains are competetive and analytical. Congrats and Best wishes to Vikram and Family. Entire financail industry in the world is watching to see what Vikram's leadership can do for Citi.

Great Feat

Its a great achievement for Mr Vikram Pandit taking into account the sheer size of the bank and its pretty much sure that the bank after being hit by the sub-prime mess is going to reward the shareholders under the leadership of Mr Vikram Pandit.

Vikram's Relevance
by Chandu on Dec 13, 2007 06:13 PM  | Hide replies

What is he going to 'go-get' for India? Being a chief of an MNC doesn't make him great for the people of India. Will his bank give low interest loan for the poor farmers or students of India. NO WAY! I would be more than glad if he could do something for his own community people who are dieing in the drains of Delhi as refugees. We are forgetting our karma path and running behind the false idols. As always. Grow up guys, get over it!

His elevation to top post is moral booster to all Indians. We should not be selfish to see materialistic benifits to Indians. We have been fools for asking for sops like low interest. We should have always asked for equal opportunities for Indians abroad. Even today after Vikram Pandit and others still Idians are sidelined for White Skin people. Yes i mean to say Racial Discrimanation is still there. Elevation people like Vikram will definately reduce it.-Daljit Singh

He was not given Citi CEO position to do favours to India. May be in his personal position he can help the cause of needy/poor Indians. It is our POLITICIANS who need to address problems of poor ppl/farmers in India, not CEO of US based Financial company. Ppl like you are good for nothing other than making irrational criticism. Be well & nice !

Chandu,

This not really matters what that bank does for us as no bank even Indian Bank will do charity for us. What matters for us is the inspiration and the thought that even we could work hard with our full capability and if achive 1% of it what Mr Pandit done will be great for us and for our country. So I suggest you, please GROW UP... think bigger!!!

Business is different and ofcourse nationality too!
by guruprasad venkatakrishnan on Dec 13, 2007 06:05 PM

I don't know why you guys are too much concerned about Indian becoming CEO of Citi.Ofcourse its great news, but as usual media is trying to overblown it and putting unnecessary pressure on Mr.Pandit. "
Pandit is a genius" says Robert Rubin, former US treasury chief and Citi Bank board member. Citi is on a verge to write down huge losses in Structured investment Vehicle(SIV) which is one of the complex instrument in their mortgage market. Already Citi shares are trading lower than 45% of its 52 week highs. Vikram needs to try innovatively by entering into profitable markets (Ofcourse BRICS) and try to hedge the losses Citi incurred at USA. Mergers & Acquitions, Demergers are going to be part and parcels of Citi in coming days. Only time will tell whether this genius could turn citi from doldrums?

PMJ, an Indian is an Indian is an Indian, irrespective of his nationality which is, by default, not writ large on the forehead. He could be owning an American citizenship.

All Right.

But his heart is always with India.

For monetary compulsions and restrictive policies of our politicians and the bureaucrats they have migrated to a foreign land where they have excelled.

Excellence on Bharatbhoomi is seldom if ever tolerated or rewarded.

Remember ?

They discovered Tagore.

And Raman.

And Khurana.

And Amartya.

Bharatvarsh excels only in one national sport.

Bhrushtaachaar !!!!!!

PMJ, Sunil Mittal's dad had an exceptionally strong clout with the people in power.

We can perhaps be prouder for Dhirubhai and his son.

BTW, do you remember that it was Sunil who had ushered Harshad into the office of Rao, the then PM, with that one crore booty ?

We are not dwelling in the past.

Sunil do doubt built an empire on a foundation built by his dad.

Dhirubhai's story is from rags to riches.
