Good move!
by krishnan on Sep 02, 2006 08:10 PM

I fully support the Kerala govt on this. School education should be kept affordable to the vast majority of the rural population. Everyone of us knows that MS with its monopoly products would be able to extract higher rents. Since softwarre has become so prevalent and necessary part of the school education we should be encouraging freeware.

This is a sensible decision and welcome one. Should not paint political color to it. Some people are fascinated by Microsoft and Bill Gates and try to make a political mileage out of it. People should not carried away by it.

Having open source software not onbly makes economical sense but can also ensure lot of creativity - M$ stifles creativity and whatever may be its altruistic noises still it is a commercial company - OSS initiatives is a welcome one and should be encouraged with open arms.

Freedom to Study ??
by Moby on Sep 02, 2006 05:26 PM

This seems totally absurd, as the students have to learn what the Government says and decides. Till now this instable political war was affecting the idustries and business, but now it is reaching the students in school also, their freedom to study ! How secured it is? As, it is clearly mentioned that the present descision is taken against the previous Governments, So does this mean that again if a new Government comes due to any unpredictable reason and will again change the system. I beleive, atleast let the students in school to be spared from this political issues. Let it be Windows or Linux, let them learn at their freedom.

Kudos- But wait and see.

Kudos to Achu and team for logging off MS and embracing Linux. As iam tired of windows,i think may be this could be a beginning, but we really have to wait and see how this will trigger our MS friends. Kerala govt ( Marxists) is always a model to the other states, but i feel they start stuffs which gets appreciation everywhere , but never reach what they aim. I appreciate the initiative, but apprehensive about the repurcussions.

Logging off Microsoft
by Jaideep Gupte on Sep 02, 2006 04:37 PM

This is a wonderful development, even though your report seems to be biased against it. Regardless of the political incentives which might be behind the move, education must be free for all. It is immoral to think that Microsoft could profit from moneys which are set aside for primary education. The money is better spent directly on the education sector.

This is the most awesome news that I have heard for weeks. Finally somebody in the administration has realized the power and efficiency of freeware.
I am personally not against Microsoft but when we could get anything if not more out of GNU/Linux than why depend on MS's costly products.
