It is very silly and useless. Definetely drinking is not going to improve anybody's skill or attitude instead it destroys them. Drinking aiding career means, he must have done some tricks and cheating to pull down others. In my openion no honest and simple person who works hard and come up in his life on his own feet wont drink.

The article researches the drinking habit only in the business prospective. I feel amused when you are linking drinking to cheating and tricks, as if it is the main reason for such thinks. Cmon! my friend, be socialize and improve.
Social drinking is the best way to bond with people. You can learn whats happening in ur firm. who is hitting who etc. Also informaly u can pass comments at ur coworker, Boss. It's the relationship and networking (Smart work) which takes ur higher Not hardworking :)
This sounds really funny to me. There are many ways of socialising than to opt for drinking alone. May be this option is true, so looks like the CEOs want their employees to earn more quickly and die quickly :-).
I am a teetotaller myself, but have seen this very fact happening. This is even truer with European organizations, where office politics plays a central role!! As stated elsewhere in the article, it is a personal choice. Whatever is gained through alcohol will definitely be lost elsewhere!
More successful people tend to drink and sometimes be forced to drink just for socializing. It's not the other way around. Liqour has not proved to be solution for any problem in the world till date.
This may be correct in the culture who honour the drinking. If you are living in a society of dishonest people with honesty then you can sustain your life for longer. Does it mean that we shall respect dishonesty???
I agree with the findings of the survey as a business man myself. I am a moderate drinker and drink for the pleasure rather than the business aspect of drinking.
However I can see a lot of business taking place at such sessions, by which even i have benefitted.
Agreed that Alcohal is not acceptable to many people and trying to justify the habbit with a business perspective is not right, but one cannot disregard the business benefits of it. People involved in exports, especially to westeren countries and particularly to europe can testify its usefulness where drinking is a part of the culture. It definetly helps in creating a personal touch to the relationship with your client/principal.
A key insight that one of the CEOs gave that alcohol increases confidence which in turn helps to socialize. If that is the case, why not look at tools that help increase confidence, such as Yoga and meditation, which are not only beneficial in general well being as opposed to alcohol. I think rediff should also research on studies that are done to find effect of yoga and meditation on career and collect similar opinions about that from CEOs.
