I was working in a General Insurance Company's subsidiary as Divisional Manager in 1992/93. One Senior Officer addressed us at the Divisional Managers' conference stating that within 10 years the automobile industry of India will be exporting quality products and the General Insurance Industry should get ready to cop up with the increased motor premium portfolio and resultant heavy liabilities. While the Industries are making changes and progress, a good Government should have supported such progress by providing good infrastructure facilities. Can we hope for such a Govt.!

Giri Girishankar
Brand India
by Giri Girishankar on Feb 19, 2006 08:58 AM

The article clearly illustrates the competitiveness and innovativeness of Indias manufacturing industries. What was the driving force that unearthed these traits? There is little doubt that liberalization of controls gave a tremendous boost to the Indian spirit of entrepreneurship. The growth of the private sector opened up the fountains of creativity, especially when having to operate in a global economic environment. There is tremendous pressure from the competing economies of China and South-east Asia. The manufacturing sector has a strong background in the country. It just needed the right amount of prodding. The previous government and the present one have provided the right environment and businesses have responded enthusiastically.

The governments at the Center and in the states have much more to do. The governments cannot afford any more to go slow on the construction and expansion of this highly important component of development. The Central and state governments must vigorously seek the cooperation of the local politicians in this regard and explain also to the people how the local economies stand to gain by the aggressive implementation of infrastructure projects.

Right clearing agents?
by D on Feb 19, 2006 08:56 AM

Can you please elaborate on this? What/who are these right clearing agents? Are you suggesting bribery? I have read the article and infact has a few good points. Infrastructure is the critical issue here;however, over the years, it has only been talked about and nothing much has been done about it yet. Identifying the problem is a good first step, dealing with it is another issue. How long are we going to cry over spilt milk? Yes! Our infrastructure is lousy, now what? India will not be a cost-efficient powerhouse forever. To gain a sustainable competitive advantage, constant changes and improvements within the system is required. I urge some of the great minds to come up with possible solutions to these problems rather than amplifying mere facts.

The value chain aspect of the service sector
by Balasubramanian.V on Feb 19, 2006 06:54 AM

Growth of revenue from service sector and its contribution to the GDP on paper looks very exciting But, we will have to be carefully and should not get too excited about revenue increase from services like call centre, BPOs or other equivalents in manufacturing. These are really at the bottom of the value chain and only numbers (cheap labour) decide who gets the business. If other low cost countries with better infrastructure are able to come up with similar business model , we will be out of the game in no time. Moral of the story, India should concentrate on increase in the number of patents every year, It should concentrate on exports with high technology content and R&D. For example our participation in ITER or Galileo now that is NEWS, that is something to be proud of.

I wish the media creates the same hype and excitement about events and news like that. Also why there is no science and technology section in Rediff ?. Please inspire the scientific sprit in India.

Brand India gets stronger

While it is heartening to read the article for an Indian, there are apparently worrisome observations!
On one hand Mr. Sankhe of McKinsey is quoted sayingthat it is the mnfg sector that has potentialtogeneratejobs. Whereas on the other hand, all the instances mentioned in the article relate to the Indian mnfg companies posting commendable technical and financial performances through value addition by resorting to technological upgradation, improvement in consumption norms and cutting down of the manpower! How do you reconcile the concern expressed in the earlier quote with the later contents?

True, Indian industry is coming of age andbecoming globally competitive. But what do we do with the huge challenge of providing jobs to people with employable skills on one hand andthe far greater number of people being left out of the reckoning withhardly any employable skill?... notwithstandng almost over 40% of the population who can neither read or write even their own names! Would this ever widening gap continue to maintain the social conditions that would sustain the "growth" and "development" as we define? Or are we running after a mirage?..Let us hope not...
