Hey.. very nice article. Even I believe that our films have destroyed the identity of our musicians. They need to be marketed in a better way. They work hard and deserve more than what they're getting.

Anu Malik, if in the US would have been penniless, after being sued for blatant plagarism... More than anything it is people like these that plague "hindi" (not indian) music industry...

Indian Music Industry.....
by Gokul on Sep 05, 2005 01:32 PM  | Hide replies

Hi,

I have always loved and really admired articles on rediff. But to my suprise the article on Indian Music Industry was a big disappointment. The topic was good...no doubts... but the content and the people who spoke on the topic were the problem. Indian Music Industry is just not Bollywood and Pop albums, even Tamil, telugu, malayalam, kannada, and other languages are part of the industry. I also strongly feel that one should take opinion from experienced music directors like Ilayaraja, AR Rahman and singers like S.P Balasubramaniam, Chitra, Asha Bhonsle who have won national awards on a number of occasions. Yes, the industry is facing problems because of piracy and various other reasons but get facts from experienced people who have been in the industry for long.

Music will never die but will always rule!!!!

Regards

Gokul

Hi Gokul

Gokul, being a researcher myself, I know what pain it takes to write an article that needs so much background research and data. I appreciate Abhilasha for a well written piece. However, I agree that the author has not considered to focus his research on South India, but overall, the issue that was discussed in the article is same everywhere in India (be it Bollywood, Kollywood, whatever...)

But I have a point to make. Even if there were no music piracy now, music directors, singers and lyricists don't lose as much, the real losers are the music companies. Its these music companies that are making this a big issue (indeed, it is, I don't deny that), but nobody made an issue years or decades back when the music companies where robbing the singers and others of their royalties. Where was the media that time? It is high-time that people in the industry realise this and be more informed abou the royalties that exists before these companies can make merry. A lot of public performance of music on TVs, Radios, Commericials go unnoticed costing millions of revenue lose. If a regulatory body looks into the royalty and piracy issue, we can soon see a revival of the industry.
