Look at taxpayers numbers...
by Nag on Feb 14, 2005 04:54 AM

shouldn't govt target to get more ppl into tax payers net? rather than getting ppl who are already paying to pay more....

Well in my view ... those who are working hard, here working hard means those who contribute to economy directly by the work they do, should not be taxed at all ... the harder you work the more you pay in taxes then whats the point of working hard? instead those into property (as an example) who buy a house and sell it after a couple of years and make huge gains should be heavily taxed as that is something that is a relatively low risk and very low effort(ofcourse there is capital investment)and huge profits ....

also india is a place that does not have accountability to get ppl to pay taxes and ppl too are smart enough to get to the loop holes ... its like building a short cut and requesting other not to take it.... its not possible to run a country like ours without taxes of all sorts, and so taxing the working(those contributing to economy) class is imminent, but govt should encorage ppl to pay tax and splash heavy fines on evaders, and increase the number of people paying taxes rather than increasing taxes.

Governments have usually taken the easier way out. This is the result of the intellectually weak individuals at the helm.
We can make India sail smoothly on 60- 70 % of the annual budget.
Just look at the corruption around you. Look at the percentages added in bids / tenders. Look at the amount of projects shown completed on paper, their budgeted money siphoned off and the work actually not being done.
Just ponder over the number of persons you have met holding goverment offices (frontliners or the top) and then evaluate whether they are weak individuals with low moral values. How many of them expect a gift when asked for the smallest of job which the government of India is already paying them to perform. The percentage is huge compared to those you think are solidly upright.

Its easier for any government to increase taxes compared to get morally upright people in so many government offices across the country.

Hamza

I did not learn anything new from the article. It is common knowledge - and even uneducated people can tell - that tax collection, policies need overhaul. Why should there be no tax on farm income? Isn't there a std deduction and low tax rate to protect the poor - whether a farmer or a mill worker? Second issue is of course tax administration. How can so many people who are not subject to TDS get away with their loot by not reporting?
I think it will serve better purpose if somebody suggests political solutions and spreads awareness about these two issues, than the theoretical discussion that ultimately reaches the same conclusion that common sense tells you - only in economist's and statistical terms.
No disrespect intended for the economists and their knowledge. But the theory should lead not stop at defining known problems in different words.

Aamod

Its very interesting to know that we should pay more tax.
First and formost our country does not have a strong root set up,where in every citizen is given the basic need of a good life clean water, clean and good hospitals, corruption free administration.
If one reads the papers everyday, raids are conducted all over India and crores are recovered from so called big shots but where is that money going and what is being done to stop such corruption, finally it is the common man who faithfully pays all taxes maintains books, and this common man is made a scrapegoat as he has no influence or connections to get his work done, while the big guys get away by putting weight or the commissioner is transfered!!!

India is a rich country full of resourses which has not been tapped properly, and it is due to uneducated politicians and poor people who cant read and write and vote as if god has appeared.
Take singapore a country small but does not have any resources has been able to come up and hit the top.

unless we have a corruption free administration and laws to put these people in proper place, and make them responsible for their actions,i dont see why should Indians be taxed more.

Well am not really sure where Indians should or should not and this article did not help in the decision either. Was this article supposed to be for someone who is attending a conference on international taxes or something.

If the idea is to write on a new or information kinda site it would have been so much easier to understand what the author wanted to say if it were in English or Hindi.

Anyways guess it was meant for some niche set of people and sincerely wish they understood.

The answer is no. We just calculate all these things theoretically. But where is the money going? I am presently working in China and the tax rate is much lower than in India here. Even then just look at what is the infrastructure here. See the roads and other facilities. They are far ahead. Let us find out what they are doing and how they have done it.

Tax?
by Narayan L K on Feb 13, 2005 12:28 PM

Why the hell should we pay the taxes? We have the right to know where the money goes to after we cough up the taxes. I doubt whether it is used properly.
