Let the Indian companies make ground...!
by PavanRaj on Dec 05, 2006 01:59 PM

I think we shud allow the Indian companies make ground in the retail sector first before allowing such big estblished players in the market. Its not a right time for the entry of wall mart in terms of the benefit of the in house companies. Let the Indian companies come together and create their own ground to be ready for a competetion with a giant like wall mart. Otherwise you are killing the growing Indian companies before they are born AND make their presence felt , by allowing wallmart in India. DONT ALLOW WALL MART NOW...! ITS NOT THE RIGHT TIME...!

Some of the people are saying it will destroy this that..
please know the history first..

At the end of the second world war, Tatas, Birlas were top Industrial groups in Asia ..I am right there was no Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Fujitsu..
Indian Goverment did not let anyone to go out or did not let anyone to come in.. Now you know the results..We were so left behind in technology and suddenly liberlisation happened..India protected so many what happened?..We just cant stir things up on our own we have already seen that for Past 40 years
Look Bihar why so backward because 80 % depend on agriculture and there is no investment..thats what happens if there is no money flowing in
India is happy if Bill Gates invests 1.7 $bn and news is also that 3000 people will be hired ..
I just cant stress again...India needs FDI..I am telling you once it comes all CMs will queue up and suck up to Walmart..
India needs more money better infrastructure..
FDI means more money ..more jobs.. it does not necessarily mean banias out..

Indian Answer to WalMart
by Siva Prasad on Dec 12, 2005 08:50 PM

India shouldn't allow world retail giants into Indian retail space at this juncture, as it will definitely damage indian retail sector which is looking-up in recent times.

I suggest Indian retail majors like Pantaloon, RPG, Shoppers Stop, Vivek's etc. What they are doing now is they are not into pure retail space where every common Indian can afford into, rather they are serving only upper middle class. They should come into middle class retail market with affordable costs without investing much of show business.

I also look forward corporate giants like Tatas, Birlas, Reliance, Ruias even like ICICI should come forward into the retail grocery market.

Once Indian retail sector started really feeling the pulse of healthy competetion and comes of age, government can think of allowing foreign retailers into India.

Look what happened in 90s
by Rajeev on Dec 07, 2005 05:36 PM

Its really sad, some of the desis (Indians who escaped to US or greener pastures) are just commenting on their will. I just read someone saying I stayed for so long in US, does that mean it gives wisdom what India needs??
They themselves queue up to Walmart to buy stuff, do not even take a look at Target etc retail stores at all.(Ofcourse they also Q up for Green Cards and never want to live in India.thats the irony). Some one pointed about razor, my dear friend poor ppl need food first.
India needs FDI, check how much is getting invested in China. All of now China wants to build biggest airport in Beijing.. Where is it getting all the money.. India needs more money invested thats the bottom line. Its getting fraction compared to china ..Now a days youth is enjoying high salary packets in IT industry ..Why ???
Go back to early 90s what happened,
Insurance sector became private, LIC was in monopoly. Now Prudential, met life are there did they eat up LIC no ?.India pushed out IBM in 70s, now all CMs want more companies in their state. Now IBM is back did it eat up TCS,Infy,Wipro etc ??.
I still remember in 90s, 10 K rupees was considered good salary, now its not why?

Do you hate Wal-mart?
by Mithun Mehta on Dec 07, 2005 06:55 AM

Wal-mart will kill the retail sector. It is going to ruin the economy. It shoud not be allowed to enter in our country!
If you argee with these statements then you are mistaken.

Wal-mart's business model is that of Every Day Low Prices(EDLP).They extract maximum value from the producers and with their excellent distribution channels provide goods to the consumer at the lowest possible prices. The consumer is the king in the true sense!

I don't understand why people critize Wal-Mart.Shouldn't the consumers in India benefit? Is competition bad?Should the age old malpractices of the retailers countinue?Should Wal-mart suffer for its efficiencies?

Imagine this. There will be significant investments in land in our country. The real estate will benefit. There will be new job openings. The factor market will benefit. There will be new investments in capital. The industry will benefit. The trade-off for this is an end to inefficient retail businesses.

We have to catch up with the changing times. In this globalized world, protection is for weak.
All the benefits of outsourcing that we are enjoying wouldn't be possible without globalization.Think again,Do you still hate Wal-mart?

Walmart.. Say BIG No
by Bhary on Dec 07, 2005 03:45 AM

Many companies are trying to enter India for selling their products to huge consumer market and Wal-Mart is not a exception to it. Well, there is a big difference between others and Wal-Mart we should notice. It deals with everyday people needs like groceries, food, cloths, statinaries etc etc etc. Here are few questions those come to my mind.

- Where Wal-Mart will buy these products from?
- Who are the consumers?
- Are existing facilities lack in providing products and convinience to their customers?

Well, after pondering on these things, what comes to my mind is, Wal-Mart is following same path as East India Company did! Most of daily need products are from India, consumers are from India, existing facilities and owned by India, then why do we need somone like Wal-Mart? Just to earn huge margins and taking money to their countries?? Definitely not. We should oppose Wal-Mart coming to our neighbourhoods.

Slow and Steady wins the race..
by SRKPRIV on Dec 07, 2005 12:11 AM

Why bring wal-mart, they come with $50b at one shot and open so many shops and all our road-side vendors will be forces to close unnecessarily as consumers shift to cheaper products (chaper quality as well) provided by wal-mart. Instead of allowing such fast change, we can allow our own internal competition to put up big or mall type shops at a much slower pace, thereby allowing the poor corner shop and other smaller players to adjust or re-align their businesses accordingly. That provides them the opportunity and at the same time the big shop business will work out well as well.
