Billionairs in Banians
by Satish Kamath on Aug 15, 2005 05:59 PM

I am afraid I dont understand why Billionairs should behave like the middle class. Perhaps it is a hangover from the person's past.

Although I can understand and appreciate the man's principles of not 'wasting' anything, riches are a blessing, and they should be enjoyed and seen to be enjoyed by those who are less fortunate. The rich should be able to stoke the passions of those less fortunate to aim to do better in life. Without such motivation, stoicism, one of the banes of the Indian way of living will forever lead to stagnation among otherwise talented individuals.
It should be remembered that only a few in the Indian subcontinent have been blessed with such riches as a proportion of the population. What should one do with this wealth? Be stingy and stash it away? Spend the rest of one's life stinting on what should be enjoyed according to the socially acceptable and set standards of how rich should live?
It is time that one started singing glories about the beauty of Lakshmi rather than the empathy with Kuchela (Sudama to some).
All the same, if the man wants to lead a simple life as described, let him do so in the privacy of his home rather than bandy it about.

Dear Writer,

You are glorifying the kanzoosi of an billionaire who had earned money using second hand machines(ignoring new technology & less quality goods)& corrupt politics. Now you will say India is poor country & can not afford that much money but are they going for technology today? What had they done for Society? Saving money on communication??? Not a brilliant idea. I may be wrong in saying all this but sure of rediff's policy is not of glorifying someone who had not done anything for society except making money for him & his childrens. I respect & had read all the article's about Tata's. I respect people like him. They are role model for society. Else what's difference between so many sites who take money to do articles & Rediff.
