Do you condone militant labour?
What is wrong with a militant labour movement?

Extremities in all forms are disastrous - Militant labour more so. When so-called educated politicians say this, I am shocked. Looks like the violence-abound communist mentality never has left our Leftists.

by sudhir mehra on Aug 06, 2005 11:04 PM

This is BAD news for Haryana, and for Foriegn companies who have been thinking of putting up units in this area.

There will be a slow down. The Real Estate prices will also go down.

Is it really the Unions(Labour) or the Politicians behind all this?

In the end who will be at LOSS?

I see the effort by the left managed trade unions trying to capture centrestage due to their current proximity to the centre, where they are behaving very irresponsibly - while they are supporting the government, they are also bashing it in public and airing their differences in public, rather than attempting to resolve it appropriately. And, should the differences be such that they need public airing, they should have the courage or gumption to step down.

Which they are not doing, as this is the first time that they are out of political wilderness at the centre, and want to make the most of it.

Fall out of the re-emergent, militant red? One only has to see West Bengal, where in 25 years of rule, the Left Front managed to get all production units move out; and all the tomtomming about Kolkata becoming the next IT hub etc. should be seen against the fact that the only increase in industry in WB is the white collar type. What should the blue collar types do?

Likewise, let us also look at Kota, which used to be a thriving industrial city, and today is only thriving on IIT coaching classes. And on looking closely, we find that the responsibility lies with the militant TU.

Labour unrest
by V.K. Gupta on Aug 06, 2005 03:52 PM

Gurgaon incident is definitely the result of congress Govt.'s
dependance on left parties for its survivoul. Left Unions which
has messed up west Bengal and Kerala industrial environments
now want to attack the prosperous states doing well industrially
and bring them down as they have done in left run states. The
attack in Gurgaon is signifacant as Gurgaon has progressed
tremendously and leftists would have liked the progress in left
states. tThe militant trade unionism forced cos to leave once
vibrant Kolkatta and West Bengal suffered. All the good work
done by Dr. B.C. Roy to industrially develop West Bengal was
destroyed by these leftists Unions. they now want to do the
samein prosperous states.
CITU leader ponts to arrears of PF. Can he tell how much is due
from piblic sector units who are dying. Will he imprison Minister
concerned or book the trade unionist which destroyed the
public sector unit.

Labour Trouble ? Or Troubled Labour
by Rajesh on Aug 06, 2005 03:40 PM

After a long time we r witnessing an incident of such a magnitude. Kudos to the media for such a brave & unbiased coverage. In most industries it is either Management pushing the Labour or Labour pushing a docile management....whenever either of them bully the other..bardaash ki bhi ek had hothi hai...In white collar industries like BPO's there is no recourse to reaction, unfortunate that most of these incidents invariably are sparked from the outside. As long as Management & Labour understand where their Dal-Roti comes from problems will not take such vicious turns. Beware of the Outsider !!

another perspective on labour issues
by dhorai on Aug 06, 2005 03:36 PM

I had been following the recent events in Gurgaon but which actually seem to be in continuation of past tensions with regards to the relations between companies and the labour the employ (eg.the attempt to ban flash strikes in the calcutta high court 2 years ago).the actions of the police demanded condemnation especially, as agents of the law, one would expect them to observe as specific conduct. However what i am struck by is the minimal covergae given to the actual causes of the concern among workers and where instead much of the discussion has been from the point of view of representatives of the managers and corporations.
While i agree there is a necesssary debate on the need to reform labour laws, what about addressing labour reforms from the perspective of labour? Afterall a significant number of cases of the stalling of work in India also happen to be forced lockouts initiated by companies themselves. How do we address this?
If reform of legislation on labour is to take place where do we locate the voice of the workers?

Labour trouble resurfacing

The thing is the person who incited these helpless workers is happy sitting in protective communist custody. where as these workes got thrashed by police. the thing is when we are in desparate need of jobs and existing environment cannot provide the jobs, why do we vitiate more industry promotion environment. communists anyway does not contribute anything towards the development of the country and instead if they resort to these kind of things, it is the worst thing that can happen to the country which must not let to happen. better communists shut their mouths, do something good for the people of the country by promoting some industry, giving work to people, provide jobs to needy improve the people's livelihood. rather than protecting the guilty who caused all this flutter. but would these communists listen at all? take the case of indrajit guptha who has stalled an important topic to be discussed in what to be done for stopping illegal immigration by bangladeshis to WB. He stopped Mamtha Benerjee from raising this important issue by citing some ridiculous procedure. these are the type of communist politicians we have in the country who do not do anything constructive for India.

Labour troubles
by Philip on Aug 06, 2005 03:09 PM

The Central rule by congress for 50 years, made the public sector undertakings to hire contract labor to get the works done, which actually was supposed to be done by the regular employees.

Take the case of electricity Boards, Railways and other such government departments, have 2 types of workers 1) Highly paid employees who never do any work (2) the toiling labor of the contractor who is on daily wages

After this 5 years rule of Congress we have 2 type of workers in private sector too, union members get the pay and contract labor work, like what is happening in the government sector.

Because the new avtar of congress is with the blessings of Marxists, a party which lost its relevance through out world. It lost its relevance at its birthplace, then why you are pushing it in India?

Marxist want to make India like what they made of Kerala and Bengal, congress can dace according to the tunes of Marxist because they require support.
