Ruining a Beautiful Country!!!! NEED LIMITS
by thomas fitch on Jul 26, 2004 09:09 AM

Maybe I'm all alone on this one, but India is a gorgeous country. Largely in part because there isn't the mass infection of stores, malls and McDonalds as in other countries. These new businesses need to be heavily restricted so they are very far apart, no giant billboards, minimal and Eco-Friendly use of the land. I have 3 McDonalds 6 Dunkin Donuts, 3 Giant supermarkets, 11 Petrol stations, two auto parts stores and numerous others within 2 square miles of my current residence. Do you think that is enough convenience? It can and will get out of hand.

clean toilets, no alcohol!
by milind on Jul 25, 2004 08:04 PM

The government should move quickly to both regulate and help this trend. Alcohol sales should absolutely be banned on the highways! Does the person starting this have no responsibility?
Apart from this, clean toilets are absent on highways and this need has to be addressed. I'm sure people wouldn't mind using 'pay-toilets' if they are going to be clean.

Disaster in the making....
by Anjan Hegde on Jul 25, 2004 04:31 PM

Gosh, McDonald's! Imagin this: India is already terribly
overpopulated and now, thank you McDonald's, this population is on track to double its mass!

Rediff ought to have composed the headline as:
McDonald's, disastar of the highways!

Restrooms on the highways...
by Jai on Jul 25, 2004 12:23 PM

Guess one item that doesn't appear in this article - which I hope these restaurants have taken into account - is the DIRE need of clean toilets on the highways. Having these chains, which also maintain clean toilets, will be a BIG boon for the travellers. The main reason why MANY Indian families still don't prefer road travel - in spite of better highways - is lack of good and clean restrooms, especially for the ladies.

Highway Restaurants- Put your money in your loos
by Gaurav on Jul 25, 2004 11:03 AM

Good Food is and always has been available on Indian highways. The main reason why we, and I am sure thousands of others, would like to stop at Branded and upmarket restaurants is the promise of a clean, well maintained and unsmelly loo. After that I wouldnt mind sufferring a burger rather than the delicious parathas at the dhabba further down the road. Unfortunately, we have been lured several times into such "good- looking" restaurants/ motels etc only to encounter offensive loos the memories of which still mar the rest of the trip.
You want more customers? Invest in your loos.

junk food in India
by trueIndian on Jul 25, 2004 08:44 AM

Obesity in the US is a big problem and the main reason is the junk food like burger, fries and pizza. Children are getting into the habit of junk food. This has not only increased obesity but also heart problems. It is shocking to see the trend is starting in India where it has a vareity of cuisine to select from. Hope people use their reasoning and not get into eating junk all day.

Its a shame !!
by Sundara on Jul 25, 2004 08:31 AM

As someone who lived and worked in the United States for many years, I am ashamed to see articles and general public opinion in India about the desirability of having Mc Donalds everywhere, as many as possible. While I am not against entrepreneurialism or American products, I would like to point out that a visit to McDonalds is a casual commodity purchase while unortunately its is deemed as a status / fashion statement in identity-starved Indian household and society. This is besides the fact that Mc Donalds is one of the most sued food company in the United States for charges varying from lying about the food quality/Composition to gross and illegal discrimination of employees and even customers on various occations.

Indians have a long way to go !

McDonald's Trend setter
by Ajit from Auckland on Jul 25, 2004 02:42 AM

Mc has always been a trend setter in food industry. one must congratulate Mr. Bakshi for setting another trend. Its really strange that silicon Vally dont have any outlet of Mc. They will definatly come up with one in short time. But it will take some time to change test of south india from idli sambar and Dosa to burgers.
cheers !!
