Information Technology can help to maximum for the rural india what i believe. Weather Forcast centres can be setup in Taluks or Hoblis and provide regular information regarding the weather using the satellites. also the inland water availability to dig borewells can be obtained from IRS satellites. Just putting India with top five countries who can launch satellites dosent mean untill it is reached a common man.

Developments in Information Technology is a waste untill it reaches a common man in villages.

This article is an eye opener for the new generations as well as influential for all partriotic readers . Some of the points raised by the writer are extremely paramount to the situation. Poverty and illiteracy still grips our agrarian economy from development. Joint efforts from individuals all are envitable. Mera Bharat Mahan !

Self-Help groups??
by Arun Gupta on Aug 12, 2004 01:16 AM  | Hide replies

It is such a pity to know from Dr Swaminathan that the present government or for that matter any other government cannot do anything to do away from the Bureaucracy, which is prevelant in our administration. Everyone knows and says that our delivery system is rotten and stinks but the present lot of politicians fails to curb the menace. Insteadly, these wise men are more and more depending on SELF-HELP groups. What is the guarantee that these self-help groups upon getting more power and promotion from govt will not start to function like the present failed publc institutions? Govt and planning commission is expecting too much from self-help group. What a pity? I am cynical unless govt pupils are made to work under strict vigilance, the poor farmers will continue to suicide even after 100 yrs of independance

Famine of Jobs Leads to Starvation

Sir,
I thought Swaminathan will say something positive. But he is trying to escape the problem sitting on the cushy chair of Chairmanship.
Right in the beginning of the interview he has stated the problem : Population Explosion.
But he has no solution to contain it.
Rest is all blah blah blah which we all read daily in the newspapers.
Disappointing.
Sincerely,

Your perception is quite right. Please accept congratulations from a retired scientist for not being dazzled by superficiality and hype.

A bit of thought... (Part 1 and Part 2)
by Bharath Arugadoss on Aug 11, 2004 08:00 PM

Part 2:

(Continued from part 1)

Hi all

Let the amount of money that a farmer invested be 1 unit for producing 1 kg of product x.

The selling price is propably 10 units in the market.

Of the 9 units of profit got, the farmer gets propably 1 unit.

(Remember that it is only the 1 unit that the farmer has got to reinvest. It is this 1 unit of money that goes into

the development of the rural economy).

While there are so many procedures and control to ensure transparency of the normal industry segment,
we do not care to see where and how the money gets distributed in the farming segment.

Improving 2 efficiency by 30 - 40% would also mean 1 would be increased in efficiency. It is like a spiralling spring that keeps on expanding.

We for sure felt that 2 holds all the key to the problem and not 1 !

Thanking You

Kind Regards
Bharath Arugadoss

A bit of thought... (Part 1 and Part 2)
by Bharath Arugadoss on Aug 11, 2004 07:58 PM

Part 1:

Hi all

I did my Masters in Microelectronics in Germany and now work for Infineon Technologies.

Me and my friend discussed the other day the farmers plight and the reasons surrounding it.

I would just like to briefly state the points of discussion here.

The point was that yield can be maximised if

1) The farmer has enough resources (technological and otherwise). These include all like knowledge of the crops,

water situation, soil conditions weather pattern ... etc. (A lot of factors which our famers have enough

understanding). This whole system is already running in almost 80 - 90%? efficiency.

2) The markets - The key factor where the farmer gets
      a) money for reinvestment
      b) money for his livelyhood.

(This is a crutial factor in the improvement of the rural economy). we felt that this runs only 30 - 40% efficiency.

For us to talk about improving the efficiency of 1 all the time is criminal waste of time.

(cont in part2 ...)
