Labour union in Kerala
by rajiv on Oct 21, 2003 06:33 PM

The article puts most of the blame on Government and beurocracy for the failure of the state to attract investors. The trade unions in my oppinion are the biggest stumbling blocks. Unless there is drastic change to the environment and the mood of the people ,I see the state of Kerala going down.Kerela as a state is facing brain drain. All the educated youth of this generation is fleeing to the nieghbiring states for jobs.In good time this will mean lack of entreprenuers and innovators in the state.

Kerala's Industrial Paradox
by rajesh dharmarajan on Oct 21, 2003 05:27 PM

Committees. Kerala is known for these committees that meet after a crisis. Lets call an egg an egg, these are post-mortem committees. Thats putting the cart before the horse isnt it? Tell me Kerala, how do you manage to cut such a sorry figure? I mean its not something that happened yesterday. Its been your status quo for more years than one can remember. First it was the unions. Now its bureaucracy in government bodies and the apathy of banks.

If you ask me, it started with the unions, long ago with tacit encouragement from the highest echelons of power politics. It was the rights of the workers that mattered, duties be damned! Even with liberal funding, units closed down or ran sick under constant lockouts and go slows. Then came the extremely stringent measures by banks and financial institutions of closing down units that were crippled by unions. As an aside Id like someone to tell me the difference between the acts of the unruly unions and these financing bodies. Now its harassment by the bureaucracy. See a vicious cycle here?

This is one state determined to go the way of doom. Oh yes Kerala, you can rest back on laurels the most literate state, the state wit

Why Kerala is Behind?
by Ajith Kumar on Oct 21, 2003 03:04 PM

Though Kerala has taken many leads in the industrial front, it is the least industrialised state in South India. The main reason behind this paradox is that the Industry portfolio is always held by minor partners like IUML. Both UDF and LDF should make it a point to have this ministry held by a Congress or CPM minister. Then only it will get the required attention and it will improve

Kerala's industrial paradox.
by K Venugopalan on Oct 21, 2003 01:53 PM

Sir,
Glad that Mr. Suresh Menon has taken pains to put it in black and white. Many in Kerala and Keralites outside lament on the sad plight of the state of affairs of the State, but all this goes to deaf ears and blind eyes, because the socalled intelligentia is interested only in the POLITICAL INDUSTRY and to sort out in futile their problems. Where is the time for pondering about the issues mentioned in your article.

Keralites are spread everywhere. They don't allow any outsider in their territory. They seem to be too much proud of themselves, self conscious carpetbaggers - brahmins, nairs and menons. Their pride is unwarranted. God has not bestowed any wisdom on the people of His own country. They do not possess charity in thinking. They cannot get along with any outsider in their territory and would expect everybodyelse to adjust with them in other States. Unless they radically change their mentality
and hypocritic outlook, others will care two hoots for Keralites.

Kerala's industrial paradox

Apropos to the article, I believe that Mr.Menon has missed out couple of information, which may add further value to his article. Firstly, about the Punaloor Paper Mills, Secondly Mavoor Rayons, third, fourth, fifth, the list is lasting endlessly, as far as the closure of industries in Kerala. The closure of all these above industries witnessed more than 25,000 jobless and innumerous suicides of helpless workers. More than 35% of the population forced to leave behind their beloveds due to the lack of support from responsible authorities.

It appears that the Kerala labour Unions have realised why there is no investment in Kerala.

The main culprits are the different Government bureaucrats, who are only interested in their salaries (legally and illegally).

Unfortunately, it is the labour unions and politicians who get blamed

Y Kerala needs any industry?
by Abhilash on Oct 21, 2003 12:16 PM

Hi,
I am a Keralite working outside Kerala. Why do we need industries in kerala? Let us close down all the industries. Let the youth of Kerala fight in the street against Globalisation and Open Market. Let the new generation die in hunger.
Let our leaders fight among themselves forming groups. Let none care about the future of Kerala. As long as there is money from Gulf (It will be better if people realize that this is alos going to be over). Let us protect all jobs and not do any computerization. After all, the God's own country should not be posing a threat to the neighbouring states in any matter. Let us try to help other states develop.
Regards...
