Great Analysis!!
by gurudev on Mar 01, 2004 04:54 PM

The analysis of the problem is very scientific - but we have other unseen variables disturbing the wave. The Corruption of the Delhi Traffic Police & the institutionalised "collection points" of bribes which allow illegal traffic violations to flourish. The average private road-user is not part of his sytem but ALL commercial vehicle operators are aware of its functionaing mechanism.
If the Delhi Police Comissioner & DCP -Traffic are unaware of this systemic malaise then they are either INCOMPETENT/Corrupt Themselves??/or IMPOTENT to act!!

The Delhiing of Bangalore!

If 75 seconds stop timing at the Delhi signals is Bad for the traffic wave, consider 150 and 180 seconds that is sported by almost EVERY major signal in Bangalore! In and around MG road for a radius of 5 KM, you generally drive for 1/2 a minute to 1 minute and wait for a red to go to green for 3 FULL minutes!!

More problems are caused because there is absolutely NO synchronization between the signals. For example, to cross the 3 KM stretch of MG road in peak hours, it takes a full HALF an hour, wheras the same takes less than 5 minutes at night!

Looks like every major city is facing this problem of overload and it is about time the authorities did something serious about it.

Wonderful article!!!

I think we need an integrated team of think-tank and people who have the authority to take action. I see no reason why traffic problems cannot be sorted out atleast at big junctions in a month. First of all the bus licenses should not be granted in 2-3s. A single license in Delhi should allow the licensee to ply a 1000 buses. There should be limited number of private operators plying in their zones. The granting of licenses to illterate people who don't understand anything about public transport and see it another way of making money gives us a chaotic national capital.
