"This is the first time the firm is developing a chip in its totality at a centre outside the US."

This may not be true. Please verify the facts before publishing it. This doesn't do justice to the people of other countries who have worked hard and contributed in no small measure towards development of some earlier chips at Intel.
However, must add that this is a big oppurtunity for India to also develop expertise in hardware.

This should propel us to develop our own chip!!!
by Ranganatha Rao on May 10, 2003 06:18 PM

Though Intel is investing so much money in India to develop its chip, the objective is to utilize our intelligence at a cheaper cost and sell it back to us at higher rates. Had this been done in United States, it would have cost them about 2 to 3 times more. We should realize that, having the necessary intelligence, it is high time we developed our own chip and market it into this world.

we indians get too excited too early on issues considered to be not so important else where.
if intel has invested so much in this country for offshore facilities then obviously it will use them.
one thing must not be forgotten that the overall cost of this development wil be much lesser as compared to u.s.
anyway wait for "xeon-india" version

Yes I do agree with this. To achieve what u said, India has to invest a lot to estabilish chip manufacturing facuilitis. A Fab (chip manufacturing unit) costs around $ 1.0 b. India needs a huge investment in this field then only we can look forward to become a truly IT super power. Today, Taiwan's TSMC is world's largest contract chip manufacturer because Taiwan made such investments 10 years back.
