A giant ponzi scheme
by cutlu on Jul 07, 2003 11:19 PM

There is a reason why you find mainly Indians peddling Amway. Fresh new Indian immigrants are green behind their ears and are the only untapped market for Amway, in the US.

Americans have long ago wised up to this pyramid scheme. No wonder then that the US accounts for only 10% of Amway's market.

I know friends who are all gaga about it in public, but secretly admit that they have not made any money. The only people who made money are the ones who started the scheme, and the early recruits.

Amway / Direct Marketers target unwary consumers ...
by AM on Jul 07, 2003 11:29 AM

Here in the US..if you are ever approached by a hesitant looking immigrant (possibly Indian) in a book store, library or a social function - who preaches the virtues of "being your own boss" and then invites you to a "meeting" at his/her home ; you can be sure that mostly you've just been "Amwayed", "Am-bushed" or "Amwhacked".

Amway and direct marketers are well known to indirectly target unwary recent immigrants after having lost favor with mainstream Americans. After all the meetings, the exhortations and seeing the dream of "becoming a millionaire" never materializing - all the while loosing friends and being made fun of...can take a toll.
Perhaps, Amway will be more of a success in India where individualistic choices are not the norm - and going along with crowd (in this case the Tupperware or Amway sellers) is percieved to be better - especailly when there is pot at the end of that rainbow.

My wife and I will, however, continue to avoid getting Am-bushed in the US from even more recent immigrants - who dont seem to have got the message that direct marketing is "like so OVER"!
