Suggestions

1. We should try to improve the quality of the
services provided by us. A little more professional.

2. Schools should start teaching proper English
emphasising on the pronunciation, that is weeding
away our native language influences on the English
we speak. I'm not talking about the hi-fi schools.

What's the next step for India Inc?
by Sarab on Apr 30, 2003 02:51 PM

The progress is heartening, however, what after this? How do we take ourselves up the value chain and not just remian doing the outsourced 'dud-proof' processes?

Are we really the backoffice
by Amit on Apr 30, 2003 02:20 PM

Most of the things that have been mentioned in the article is true but a sudden job spurt has taken place due to mushrooming of call centres that require nothing but just person with a fluency in English and so most of the graduates have landed themselves into a job...but is there any career in this? That's the thousand dollar question?

Disheartening News
by Bhatnagar on Apr 30, 2003 02:17 PM  | Hide replies

It seems we in India have missed another wave - the knowledge wave. Thanks to our inborn tendencies of aping the west and considering it superior. The news that India would be the back office to the world is not the one to be happy about but to cry and be alarmed.

We have often been proud of the fact that we have been the teachers of the world and we have given all the wisdom to the world. But perhaps, we shall now become perpetual servile civilisation of the west. We have misplaced it again. In our mindless run for money, we have forgotten to create an IT capability which can give products to the world and not reply on services given by the west. It is a slavery of a diff kind where we shall always have sleepless nights lest our US based client might withdraw its order. We needed to be self sufficient and knowledge wave was one wave where we Indians had the intellectual advantage of our intelligence for which the west recognises us. But we have frittered that away also. And now we have no other option but to continue as the BACK OFFICE TO THE WORLD.

But is that what we want to, is that what we desire and deserve, is this the destiny of India - the great !!!

Let's pause before we all start celebrating

Hi,
i agree with this view.I am happy there are people who can see this fact.Actually being a backoffice(I define backoffice as service-provider for developed nations)will solve employment problem for some or most percentage of people. But see the situation after it.WE will have no techonlogy, industry, research, development of our own as india will become just a BACKOFFICE...so lets make INDIA a DEVELOPER rather than BACKOFFICE(servant who gets paid for services to developer).

by Zia on Apr 30, 2003 01:25 PM

Cheers for a well established English speaking work force of india for it is they who have scored a big win worldwide. I hope this trend will continue and will encopurage more and more companies to seriously look towards India for their outsourcing deals.
