Thank you Ms. Tanvi for illustrating all the good qualities possessed by the Legendary Lawman of India. A truly inspiring career he had. You are gifted by his remarkable association and unparalleled guidance in your professional work. Thanking you. Yours sincerely Dipankar
Shri.Ram Jethmalani ,a genius in advocacy and a legal luminary par excellance, who has passed into the ages was a refugee who came to India with the pant and shirt he wore and a ten rupee note.Soon enough he moved out of the refugee camp and started practicing as a lawyer and his proudest moment was reached when he was elected leader of 175000 lawyers in our country five times,a feat unprecedented in the history of the bar.(Chairman ,Bar Council of India)He proved that a Maharashtra CM obstructed anti-smuggling operations. He quoted an Act of 1909 wherein it is mentioned that an advocate cannot refuse his services to anyone. He would oppose preventive detention by writing a central page article in a prominent newspaper, court arrest and vehemently oppose it in party forum. When the then PM asked him to resume his seat saying that he had already held the floor for 17 minutes,he shot back “if my voice is stifled ,your government will not last 17 days”.Even while living in the departure lounge of god’s airport,he would not call it quits and would defend anyone who was a hapless victim of outrage. At the age of 93,when he appeared in a case in the Supreme court, when asked when he is going to retire,he replied “you are asking me when I am going to die.”Very few practitioners of law could match his mastery over the science of jurisprudence or his legal acumen. When Punjab was on the boil,he made a pilgrimage by visiting the border districts of Ferozepur
With all respect, I must state that I didn't like his comments during the Jessica Lal murder trial. It was character assassination. Concerning how a lawyer should behave, I prefer Gandhi's opinion.
