There is a report in the paper today that sparrows have gone missing from Delhi main city. Sparrows need safe locations where they can breed, move around freely and have access to food and water. We stayed in Princess Park close to India Gate from 2007 till 2010 which has a lot of big trees and lot of hedges. There were at least eight species of regular birds there, sparrows were in plenty. Since past seven years we are at Noida with lots of hegdes in our area. Sparrows are in hundreds. * In Delhi Bougainvilleas should be planted in corners of parks and allowed to grow into big thickets. Sparrows and other small birds will slowly come on their own. Why Bougainvillea ? Because it provides ample void spaces for their small nests and its thorns ensure that cats do not bother them. Bougainvillea is a maintenance free plant and can be allowed to grow into a thick bush, it even climbs onto tall trees and gives beautiful flowers in various colours.

sir,earlier our homes have small space where sparrows can live and make family.younger ones have protection inside our homes.As todays world is a kind of concrete jungle these sparrows are forced to leave our homes.These sparrows are vulnerable to minas,crows and few other birds.due to competition for food these bigger birds eliminate sparrows eggs.When you encourage these sparrows near our abodes they have chance to multiplicate.At one point few years back when I am living outside the city I encouraged them by placing boxes to encourage nesting.14 eggs,nearly 7 to 8 sparrow families survived with babies.For your information,I will provide another example,I put DIsh Antenna box where it has 2 holes on 2 sides.Two families started living in the same box by entering from different sides.Four small babies came after few months.I never did anything 2 them.Just i never disturbed them.They enjoyed my company.
