Closing down of Strand Book Store
by jyotirmoy bagchi on Mar 03, 2018 01:22 PM

So sad. I used to frequent this place for old English classics. Never knew that i tread on the footfall of so many celebrities. Best part of the shop. Also felt very sad to know about Rhythm House. I still have so many books and music cassettes to buy from these two hallmarks of Bombay

Bookshops of Bombay
by K. Gopal Rao on Mar 03, 2018 01:08 PM

Having spent my formative years in ye olde Bombay, can anyone tell me whether 3 bookshops I loved and knew well are still alive and kicking. I refer to Taraporevalas, and New Book Co, both on DN Road, and the third was a much smaller place called Happy Book Stall on Colaba Causeway. Many are the happy hours I hv spent during summer holidays, wending my way from VT to Colaba on foot, stopping at each of these 3 shops on the way, and some of the roadside sellers on DN Rd as well. Those were afternoons well spent, before catching a train back from Churchgate to Andheri where we lived. Probably a matter of memories, but nowhere hv I got the bookshop atmosphere in later life as deeply as at these 3. I was, of course, in Bombay of old much before Strand. So, anyonyone knows?
