WHEREVER it is from... we get best idli/sambhar/chutny in tamil nadu only... In karnatak, as usual, they spoil idli by mixing some raagi etc... and bangalore chutny is also tasteless....
May be Idly invented in north. because in this country it is practice that- what ever is good is always attributed to north origin irrespective of where it is from.
Sorry Mr. Sujan Mukherjee..! You may have heard a wrong / false openion. Ancient (Sanga period) Tamil people (Dravidans) who were the first & unique human civilisation of Sindhus, used to cultivate black gram (Ulundu in Tamil - Urad in North) & pigeon peas (Thuvarai in Tamil - Urad in North) as polycultural grain with Rice (Arisi in Tamil - Chawal in North) among 3 cultural crop rotation. And, the same system of cropping has been maintained even now. While these three are the main ingredients for making Idly & Sambar, The cooked rice & Idly stands as the preferred Primary food for Tamil & other Dravidan states. The same nowadays being widely celebrated across the country & world. The steam cooked food patterns like Momo & Peta may have been derived from South east Asian steam foods.
